Full Moon Editorial Review
Sights to See
The astronauts of the Apollo missions--which date from 1967 to 1972--took over 32,000 photos; from these, curator Michael Light has selected and perfected 75 stunning and informative prints. Aside from the historical and scientific import, these images sometimes also pack an unexpected emotional punch (more so than the bombastic audio rendering of the big bang in the nearby exhibit halls).
Infinite Value
The photographs are modestly displayed in the upper hallways of the Rose Center for Earth and Space. A "Full Moon" photo of astronaut Edward White disembarking from the Gemini is as moving as a photo of fellow crew member filling a container with lunar soil. One uncredited astronaut took an amazing picture of his family snapshot placed on the moon's surface. Pictures like these, and a compelling shot of the Earth hovering over the moon's horizon, are powerful reminders of mankind's small place in the vast universe.
