The Scene
A few years ago, this narrow space on 7th Street opened as the stupendously named "It's Greek to Me." Since then, the decor and name have undergone revision. Subtle lighting, earthy woodwork, hanging pots and a comfy banquette complete the upscale Mediterranean vibe.
The Food
The menu offers so much to look over that you'll be happy for the complimentary pita and not-too-fishy taramosalata, perfect with an inexpensive, fragrant glass of retsina. Start with the mixed seafood, bean and arugula salad--a surprisingly pleasant combination of textures. The meatballs, accented with mint, are as the menu promises, "light as air." Staple entrees like moussaka more than make the grade, but the selection of clay pot-cooked dishes--tender lamb with orzo, or fish of the day with eggplant and zucchini--take comfort food to a new level.

A co-worker tipped me off about Pylos and since I am huge fan of Greek food, I took his advice. I highly recommend reserving a table on Weekend nights. Since we called ahead, we barely waited at all. The tables are situated very close to one another, but not in a bad way. We found ourselves conversing with the four-top next to us toward the end our dinner, and it made for a very nice community atmosphere. The restaurant had a European feel to it and was very relaxed. The food was top-notch: authentic and fresh as can be. We ordered the chicken lemon rice soup, stuffed grape leaves, dorade whole fish, lamb chops and ouzo chocolate mousse for dessert. Everything was great. The wine list filled with Greek wines provided great choices as well. I honestly have considered getting a standing reservation at this place and can't wait to go back.

Went there last friday during a visit to the city.. We didn't have reservations, but, they took our name down and promised to call us if one of their parties cancelled.. Well, they didn't us.. Fortunately we were in the neighborhood and checked back with them.. They said that they had a table for us and it still took them some 20 mintues to seat us.. I guess its all part of the New York charm.. Anyway, once we were seated, the brought us some warm pita bread and a white bean spread. Was quite tasty.. We ordered their artichoke moussaka, but, they were out of it, so, we ordered a crisp fried zucchini and eggplant rounds served with tzatziki instead.. Wasn't bad.. And, then for our main course, we ordered, shrimp and sea scallops in a creamy ouzo flavored tomato sauce. served over greek egg noodles.. The shrimps were huge and nicely done and so were the sea scallops.. The sauce was also quite good and remided me of some taste from some of my childhood dishes, but, I can't quite put a finger to it.. For my vegeterian brother, we oredered, the classic spinach rice pilaf served with crumbled feta, lemon and cracked black pepper.. Was quite tasty.. Had a lot of dill in it though.. All in all, a nice dinner.. We didn't order any alcohol, but, they had a decently good winelist. I might go there again and I'll have to remember to make reservations..
