Editorial Review for Blue Sky Bakery – by Dana Bowen

In Short
This sun-drenched bakery and antique kitchenware shop--a popular hangout among Park Slope's stroller set and Atlantic Mall shoppers--specializes in down-home desserts and snacks: Moist banana bread, sticky sour cream-nut cake and tall chocolate-ganache torte are favorites. A wide selection of oversized muffins, from apple bran to zucchini-plum, change daily. Wood tables fill at lunchtime, when empanadas, olive-onion-Virginia ham pizza and other snack-sized savories emerge from the oven.

These muffins dont just taste good, they put me in a great mood. I dont know what ingredients theyre using, but I feel light and healthy when I eat them. I go at least once a week and give Blue Sky muffins as gifts. Ive met the owner and hes a great guy. Id much rather support him than a chain that sells overpriced baked goods with underwhelming flavor.

Pros: great food, charming

Cons: too many strollers (no offense kids!)

I came to Brooklyn from Manhattan to get a massage at D'mai, and stopped at Blue Sky for breakfast. I expected from the reviews that the muffins would be enormous (since that's what many of the other reviews said), but they were pretty normal-sized muffins... Not sure why everyone thought they were so big, but they're much smaller than the gargantuan Starbucks muffins and look like they came out of a regular muffin pan to me (and I bake a lot). In any case, I had a very tasty piece of their chocolate chip banana loaf. Quite yummy, but not really worth going all the way to Brooklyn for if you don't live in the area. Also, don't go expecting to get a "traditional" muffin... all of theirs are generally unique combinations of different fruits and nuts and veggies and chocolate, and they only have about 5 or 6 different varieties every day which change every day... so expect to try something kind of new. But if you're in to fun flavor combinations, you may really like this place. The texture of the chocolate chip banana bread was really nice and the flavor was good as well... but again, just not really worth going all the way to Brooklyn for. If you are in the area however, it's a nice breakfast... The shop itself is quite cute with lots of little tables stacked with different magazines and newspapers, and is decorated in a country/home-y way... Lots of sunlight, very cute :)

Pros: Yummy banana bread, unique muffins, cute shop

Cons: Maybe not worth the trek if you don't live in Brooklyn
