Editorial Review for Sir – by Drew Pisarra
The Scene
You'll notice something's different at this boutique right off: A sewing machine has been placed in near proximity to the cash register. Surrounded by spools of colored thread, and with a closet crammed full of fabrics and scraps, designer Joanna Baum is likely to be transforming a leather jacket into a purse or a pair of cargo pants into a jacket in between the time she'll spend answering questions about the store's name. (Answer: Not a fan of "girly-girl" women's boutique names, Baum went the other way.)
The Goods
Chris Horoschak's unisex stenciled T-shirts, jewelry by Bella, a small selection of menswear and Baum's latest playful works-in-progress. The vintage clothes in the back are awaiting Baum's transformative cuts and stitching, though if you like yesterday's finds "as is," you can buy them beforehand, too. As for the books on display (and for sale), they're ones which partners Horoschak and Baum credit as their sources of inspiration; depending on when you go, poet Pessoa may be sharing shelf-space with a tome on signage in Barcelona.

I simply love Sir. The store itself is bright, friendly and charming as are the owners and sales people. The clothing and jewelry are both unique and beautiful. I find myself there every year around the holidays grabbing up pieces as gifts for the dificult to please women on my list.
Pros: Good Location, Friendly Staff, Original Items
Cons: None

Brooklyn has more than it's share of lovely little boutiques these days and Sir is one of my favorites. While I am especially fond of the jewelry, the clothing collection has only gotten better every year. If you come at the right time you can actually see one of the owners/designers working on a new piece right at the counter. It's so cool and so are they.
Pros: Interesting, Friendly, Original
Cons: None
