The Scene
Those who appreciate beer and Wiener schnitzel flock to this no-frills beer garden with a focus on the brew, not the bling. The bar, modeled after brewhouses in Cologne, keeps things simple, from the slightly shifty looking darkened bar in front to the no-frills pine tables and chairs in back. The crowd is young, hip and amicable.

The Draw
None of the area's hype and attitude plague this low-key joint. In warm weather, patrons take their smoking and drinking seriously in the outdoor garden with its six large picnic tables. Beer beginners should try the Erdinger Weissbier Hefeweisen or Hofbrau Edel Helles, both light champagne-like brews; or the Gaffel Koelsch, the bar's special ultra-fermented formula. Hearty, unpronounceable edible fare includes jagerschnitzel, kaesespatzle and of course, Wiener schnitzel.

Had a wonderful time here again recently. We went twice; on a Tuesday, which was mellow and cozy and on a Friday night at 10 pm, which was loads of fun, very busy and typical German brew pub vibe. I can't say anything bad about this place, great beer selection, well poured (I'm a stickler for good beer service), delicious food both times we went and good service, especially considering how busy it gets. Can't wait for the beer garden season to begin!

I have been to Loreley 8 or 9 times, and on a few of those occasions I have brought German friends along with me. We all agree that the food and drink = superb! I recommend the potato soup, gouda cheeseplateand handmade pretzels as appetizers, and every entre I've sampled has consistently been good.

Good solid Bavarian food in my opinion. My favorite is: Relbekuchen mit apfelmus und preiselbeeren (potato pancakes with apple sauce, lingonberries and smoked salmon). It's a very busy place, especially on weekends, but there is a back garden that you can hang out in, even when it's cold, as they have heat lamps. I like the nice, friendly staff, the great selection of German beers (over 10) and excellent food. Not the cheapest, but better than most I've had in Mahattan, and priced about the same. I highly recommend this place.

The Details on Loreley Restaurant

Save Time:

The space is well-equipped to handle groups of 10 or more, but booking ahead is a must (and space in the beer garden can't be reserved in advance).

Save Money:

Order the half liter, the bar's largest size, for the most cost efficiency. Don't worry--you'll drink it all.

The Extras:

Wine from the Loreley region and German brandies, schnapps and spirits round out the drinking menu.

Know Before You Go:

Although the bar may remain open until 4am every night, it tends to close depending on the size of the crowd--which means as early as 12am on weeknights.
