Editorial Review for Per Se – by Allison Austin

The Scene
The Time Warner Center's crown jewel surrounds diners with detailed luxury: soft cream leather on the walls, brass and copper tiles on the floor, and tables dressed with layers of fine linens. Service is among the best in the city, and diners are attended to with aplomb.

The Food
As the internationally acclaimed chef of the French Laundry, Thomas Keller has earned a reputation as a perfectionist. Diners benefit from the first taste--miniature sesame cones topped with a scoop of buttery salmon tartare, which arrive as a gift from the kitchen--to the last, gracious nibbles of homemade truffles. In between, dishes like "liver and onions," buttery, tender ramps with lush duck liver pâté; Keller's signature "oysters and pearls" made with tapioca, just-warm oysters, sweet butter and a wealth of caviar; and the genius combination of foie gras, peach jelly and--unexpectedy--young cilantro leaves, sweep diners off their feet.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Dinner is $275, with choice of a regular or vegetarian nine-course menu. Friday through Sunday, a five-course lunch menu costs $175.

What to Drink

The wine list is exceptional but pricey. It's worth it to splurge on wine pairings.

Look Good

The blue wooden doors at the entrance don't open. Instead, two glass panels to the left and right of the doors open upon approach.

The Extras

The restaurant charges a flat gratuity fee of 20 percent, regardless of your party's size.

We went with friends who were on their honeymoon. The restaurant pulled out all the stops and we even got a tour of their amazing kitchen. I think we ended up with more than the standard 9 courses with all the little chef extras that kept appearing. Like a previous reviewer we would all recomend the wine pairing, which is a taste experience all in itself. The ladies particularly appreciated the footstools for their purses. They have no issues adjusting their menu to food allergies or diet restrictions and every member of staff we met, made us feel as if we were the only people in the room. The view is also exceptional across Columbus Circle to Central park. Only down side was the table cloth & napkins were not lint free and only came in white, so we were all covered in white specs when we left. However, the 5hrs we spent dinning was fabulous and it was a once in a lifetime experience we all thoroughtly enjoyed

Pros: Food, Service, Wine List, Ambience

Cons: Table cloths & napkins don't come in black or lint free

The food, service, wine list, and dining room were all amazing. We shared a bottle of champagne. It was nice. Everything on the menu looked 100% delicious and I had a hard time choosing what to get. The servers were all super pro and took very good are of us, going so far as to snap of a picture of me and my coworker. I was so happy I found a great place to spend my work's money at!
