Editorial Review for Carl's Steaks – by Allison Austin
In Short
Owner Carl Provenzano opened this Murray Hill spot to fill a long-standing culinary gap: cheesesteaks. And while Carl's does the famed Philly version, with chopped beef, onions and your choice of Cheez Whiz or provolone, they also offer up a lesser-known Atlantic City version, this made with the same chopped beef and onion, but with American or provolone on a harder roll. Carb-phobes rejoice: there's a bread-free version for Atkins fanatics.

I don't know if theres anything better than a cheesesteak from Carl's @ 4:30am after bar hopping. These things are delicious... the line is out of the door usually after last call. You can choose types of cheese- true Phillie-goers usually opt for the whiz but I prefer American. They're huge too and priced very cheap, which makes this stop even more tempting. Service/staff is quick and very friendly. Grabbing one on a Friday and eating it @ home after work with a few beers=HEAVEN.
Pros: Amazing cheesesteaks!!! Choice of onion or no onions/few types of cheeses
Cons: If your health conscious this may not be the best place for you!

I live above this mouth watering place that the drunk crowd flocks to, but I have to say that the chicken cheesteaks are below average. They are famous for keeping pre-cooked chicken in a metal bin for hours at a time. i have never seen them actually cook the chicken. so stick to the beef if you go. Having said that, people do love it......but chicken lovers beware!
Pros: Beef steaks are tasty
Cons: Chicken sits out for hours and expect bad service
