Editorial Review for Casa Mono – by Allison Austin

The Scene
This bustling, energetic little corner restaurant is a pleasure, particularly for those lucky enough to snag one of the bar stools facing the kitchen, where chef and part-owner Andy Nusser leads in a remarkably well-choreographed dance. The room is compact: Tables are right next to each other, leaving just enough space for squeezing in and out. Service is knowledgeable, efficient and, with the exception of the brisk welcome at the door, pleasant.

The Food
The tapas here are the real deal--brightly flavored and distinctive. They rise to greatness via careful preparation and fine ingredients. A trio of poached egg, roasted potatoes and Mojama--salt-cured tuna that resembles and tastes like cured ham--is spot-on; even brussels sprouts--simply grilled--are memorable. Other dishes show a hint of extra inspiration: Charred-rare wild boar is transformed by a squiggle of honey. Palate-refreshing tangerine sorbet topped with muscato and pomegranate seeds is an exceptional finish.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

The list is a Spanish wine-lover's dream, offering bottles by their designation of origin (D.O.) and ranging from an affordable $26 Perlat to a more fantastically priced Clos L'Ermita ($500). For the money, the full-flavored, semi-dry $12 quartino of Rottlan Torra Reserva is perfect.

Know Before You Go

Just around the corner is Bar Jamon, a casual wine bar where a daily selection of cheeses and cured hams is available.

Casa Mono is my favorite restaurant in the city. It is elegant but not pretentious. Classy but not stuffy. An all-around delightful experience that I like to share with family or close friends on special occasions. The wine list is excellent, and becomes even better with a recommendation from your server. The food is just...delicious.The Calamares Fritos is perfect - I was in heaven. I love the c decor, and the overall feeling that not only are you having an enjoyable time dining, but so is everyone around you.I would recomend to anyone

With all the places to eat in NYC do not go to Casa Mono. The wait staff was angry, rude and talking about our table during our entire stay. When i turned around to tell one of the waiters i could hear him, he walked away, but not after calling a gentleman at our table a name. I was saddened by the awful service, and then disgusted when the bill came and was close to $400, they should have paid us to endure that service.
