Editorial Review for Asiate – by Allison Austin

The Scene
Those not buzzing after the walk through the glowing Mandarin Oriental Hotel lobby will feel the magic once inside the restaurant, where wall-to-wall windows show off a magnificent view of city lights and Central Park. Dressed in subtle earth tones and soft fabrics, the dining room is sophisticated, luxurious and bi-level, ensuring almost all tables a view. Service is impeccable.

The Food
Begin with seared scallops served atop smooth, buttery celeriac puree and surrounded by truffle consomme, or the layered foie gras and venison terrine--a clever pairing that tames the richness of the foie. The shining star among entrees is the Kobe-style filet of beef in a silken, oxtail sauce, but the suckling pig with pig cheek confit is also good. End the meal with the excellent chocolate fondant served with a fascinating fromage blanc sorbet; the deconstructed parfait is unsatisfying.

Two prix-fixe menus are available at lunch: two courses (no dessert) for $25, and three courses (includes dessert) for $35. At dinner, diners must choose between a three-course menu ($85) or the six-course tasting menu ($125).

What to Drink

The wine list is interesting and features wines from all over the world, but with a strong emphasis on white wines from Austria and Germany.

My wife and I attended this resturant for our two year anniversary. It was last minute and when I called to inquire about reservations, they were completely booked, but they informed me to call back at around 6pm to see if there were any cancelations. I was lucky....there was an opening. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the maitride and were seated promptly. We asked if there was a window seat and they offered something relatively close. Once we were seated and ordered our drinks the Maitride then informed us that a window seat opened up and if we would like to move. Service was impeccible, from them knowing each deatil about the items on the menu, to prompt service which made me feel not rushed, but pampered. Our appitisers were brought out shortly after ordering, but were not taken away until we were finished and had a few minutes to "take in" all the flavors. As the maitride stated, they strive to design food that will rival the view from the resturant. Well, they have achieved it. I had a Foi Gras appetizer with the Lobster Entre -- both divine. My wife had a beet salad appetizer with the Wyagu beef entre that was simply perfect. The protion sizes are a little small, but we found ourselves adequately satisfied. Deserts were good (our favorite was the Choclate Fondant...the black seaseme cake was okay). Overall Pros: Food, Decor, Service Cons: difficult to obtain reservation, Can be pricey I will definately be going back....Also they have a great bar next to the resturant that searve a lite menu with a excellent view as well. Great for entertaining out of town guests.

Pros: View, Food, Service, Decor, immense wine selection

Cons: Difficult to get a resrvation (but worh the wait), a little Pricey

I went there on a date last night and had such a wonderful experience! Service was great! Food was excellent but in small portions considering how much they charge. We had the waiters come over every 15 mins or so to ask if everything was ok at our table. We also had whom I believe was the manager come over to our table and chat with us for a few minutes....in all, I had a great time and would not hesitate to go back!

Pros: Food! Wine list! Service was excellent!

Cons: Small portions of the food.
