Perfect place to have brunch (or dinner) in the clouds. Gorgeous view of Central Park and the city. Ask for a table by a window when making a reservation. Good is rich and $$$$.

The big prestige restaurant in the Mandarin Oriental hotel, Asiate has what is undoubtedly one of, if not the best view in New York. It's utterly weatherproof, so watching a storm here is an especially perverse pleasure, one that makes you feel almost godlike in your power. It's great on a nice night too. But plan on bringing a bag of krugerands to pay for your meal.

Great special occasion place. You can't beat the view up in this place. Dinner for 2 with drinks, apt, and meals with one desert will push 350 but the food is very tastey. I'd recommend going with the specials as they seem to put more effort into them.

Reservations are a bit tough so if you want to go on the whim, try Monday or Tuesday.

Recommended with a caveat. Asiate is a lovely restaurant - lovely space, good views (even if ours was obscured by fog and rain) and most of the service is good. My caveat is with the sommelier who took almost 15 minutes to get over to us once we requested to speak with him about various artisanal champagnes and then another 15 minutes to bring over our champagne - that is after I went over to the maitre'd and informed him of our waiting. There was no bread offered - just an amuse bouche when we first sat down. After my complaint, we were then assigned to the assistant manager who could not have been more helpful but Richard, the sommelier, was certainly not impressive - nor did he even pour from the punt!

The place was full and people were still being seated at 10:00 pm. I would suggest that on a busy Saturday night perhaps they should spring for a second sommelier to give Richard some breathing room? I highly recommend the food (French/Asian and lots of froth in their dishes) but for a restaurant to really be top notch, they need for their service to be more seamless. Also, after two confirms that this was a birthday celebration in which they called me, took the name of the birthday celebrant, etc. - no candle, no cake, no nothing. Oops again.

The View is closely Rivaled by the food!. My wife and I attended this resturant for our two year anniversary. It was last minute and when I called to inquire about reservations, they were completely booked, but they informed me to call back at around 6pm to see if there were any cancelations. I was lucky....there was an opening.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the maitride and were seated promptly. We asked if there was a window seat and they offered something relatively close. Once we were seated and ordered our drinks the Maitride then informed us that a window seat opened up and if we would like to move.

Service was impeccible, from them knowing each deatil about the items on the menu, to prompt service which made me feel not rushed, but pampered. Our appitisers were brought out shortly after ordering, but were not taken away until we were finished and had a few minutes to "take in" all the flavors. As the maitride stated, they strive to design food that will rival the view from the resturant. Well, they have achieved it. I had a Foi Gras appetizer with the Lobster Entre -- both divine. My wife had a beet salad appetizer with the Wyagu beef entre that was simply perfect. The protion sizes are a little small, but we found ourselves adequately satisfied. Deserts were good (our favorite was the Choclate Fondant...the black seaseme cake was okay).

Overall

Pros: Food, Decor, Service

Cons: difficult to obtain reservation, Can be pricey

I will definately be going back....Also they have a great bar next to the resturant that searve a lite menu with a excellent view as well. Great for entertaining out of town guests.

What a romantic place!!. I went there on a date last night and had such a wonderful experience! Service was great! Food was excellent but in small portions considering how much they charge. We had the waiters come over every 15 mins or so to ask if everything was ok at our table. We also had whom I believe was the manager come over to our table and chat with us for a few minutes....in all, I had a great time and would not hesitate to go back!

Most romantic view in the city, the food and service was excellent!. I have been here at least 3 times for the last year, and all I can say is super! I guess it helped that my friend was a guest at the hotel, but I think irregardless of that as long as you are well dressed and have made reservations, you will be accommodated properly. The tables at the corner are the best, and that's what I usually request (and get!) when I have dinner at this place. The cocktails are very good, my favorites are the Mandarin sunset and the Ginger Mojito. The portions of the food are perfect! The wine selection is not exceptional but excellent enough where you can choose from rose, to champagne to red etc. from vineyards all over the world. I have never had a bad experience here, nor at the hotel bar or their lobby lounge, even at times when I wasn't a hotel guest. The staff are very professional and friendly. I'm a big fan and I always recommend this place to my friends.

Great Service, Beautiful view. I LOVE Asiate. I went for the first time during the restaurant week and I highly recommend this restaurant. The waiters were friendly and attentive. Food was definitely satisfying and the view was amazing. I would definitely go back and I think I will become a regular here at asiate.

worst attitude in New York. Twice my daughter and I have tried to go for tea. We were turned away both times with various excuses that made no sense, even after calling for information and being told that although they did not take reservations, we would probably have 'no problem' getting a table. We were told that we could be seated until 4:30, but upon arrival at 4:18 we were told we were too late, but if we had been staying in the hotel, tea would be served. We were told that seats were being held for guests, but when I had called on the phone they said they were not busy. Evidently they only seat VIPs - we were nicely dressed, and in fact, stay at the Mandarin when we travel. The hostess was quite unpleasant and off-putting.

Average. We went to this restaurant based on the reviews we read here.

The food was good, the view excellent and the service shockingly poor.

The service was not even average.

We do not expect to be treated like royalty but you are paying a premium here for food and service.

The waiters were casually chatting and joking and made numerous mistakes with our order.

We found the room to rather bland in decor and not worthy of the view and buzz.

Certainly not to the level of the hotel which is very well done.

It seems we are in the minority but this was our experience.

Have a drink at the bar instead and enjoy the view and save your money.

PS I called to confirm my reservation and was literally on hold for 20 min.

I didn't think this was an omen.

worth it for the view alone .... ... thankfully, the food is great too. I'm basing this on an experience at Restaurant Week, which I think compliments the restaurant any more. A lot of restaurants skimp on their Restaurant Week menus, but not only was Asiate's more than plentiful, our waiter actually encouraged us to get it. Such a nice change of place from expensive restaurants that participate in Restaurant Week only to then sneer at you when you order off the menu. I'll be back here in a heartbeat, especially with out-of-town guests. It's the perfect way to show off the city and its cuisine.

Unprofessional, inattentive and ineffecient service. We had dinner at Asiate and were incredibly shocked and disappointed by the service. We enjoyed our meal very much. However, we all know that it is the entire dining experience that makes the evening enjoyable. We found most of the staff inattentive and unprofessional. The bartender kept us waiting for quite a while even though the bar was not full. We could see him on the other side the wall chatting. We were completely unable to get anyone's attention.

The sommelier told us that the wine we selected was not chilled enough. So, he suggested waiting a few minutes for it to chill. Unfortunately, he forgot about us. It is unfathomable that the wine did not appear till after our first course arrived! We tried in vain to get his attention to inquire but we couldn't even catch his

eye. I believe that he could have offered another suggestion or kept us abreast of how much longer it would be. In fact, he never apologized and was quite surly.

Our waiter was also neglectful. Our wine was rarely poured. We also tried to get his attention but he was also nowhere to be found. When we finally requested our bill - the same thing occurred. It took 15 minutes to get our bill.

A restaurant of this caliber should never have an inexperienced staff. They should be on the top of their game. We are so unhappy with the service that we will not recommend the restaurant to anyone. What makes a 4 star restaurant is an efficient staff (which is what Asiate is completely lacking).
