What People Are Saying About Cafe Gray

The Scene – A long, dim hallway transports diners to the bar, where beveled mirrors and embossed leather banquettes provide a dash of retro glam. But it's in the dining room, where confident cooks move about the showcase kitchen, and seamless service attends to the most mundane necessities, that the restaurant's overall excellence is fully expressed. – – The Food – Chef Gray Kunz's hearty country French fare, with its unexpected, intriguing spicing, is simply excellent. He wows with vitello tonnato, a tuna aioli spread over thinly sliced raw veal, and with fresh…

The Extras:

Know Before You Go:
Those hoping for a Central Park view should visit during the day, as the lighting in the open kitchen reflects off the glass and creates a mirror effect after dark .
What to Drink:
Most wines on the list hover around $65, but the engaging sommeliers will recommend more modestly priced wines, like the Gigondas ($42). Wines by the glass range from $8 to $15.
ambiance
72.77999877929688% positive
  1. We had a good view of the kitchen and the trees in Columbus Circle.
  2. Although acoustically successful (if you prefer spaces on the quieter side), David Rockwell's overwrought, rather suburban design is irredeemably problematic: why ever would diners choose to be seated away from the windows, when just beyond is one of the
  3. Very good german/austrian influenced food with a very cool decor and good service.
  4. The ambience is sub par with cheesy mirrors on all walls and a bad refection on the window behind the kitchen, which blocks your view to Central Park.
  5. My boyfriend and i went here for a romantic dinner out.
  6. If you want great food, bad service and a terrible view Café Gray if the place for you.
  7. loved the view of Central Park.
  8. The service was very friendly and attentive, and the view in the afternoon was wonderful.
  9. the decor is hideous and the lighting reinforces the feeling you are eating in a Marriott in Vegas.
  10. First we expected the "great view" but the view is blocked by the kitchen.
  11. The food here was great, but it was a little pricey, and the atmosphere wasn't as warm and inviting as it could have been.
  12. The view is outstanding and the open kitchen is a nice touch
dessert
61.11000061035156% positive
  1. although they did try to make up for it from giving out complimentary desserts, you can't really substitute sweets for real entree, and charge your customer the full price?
  2. The appetizers(especially the boullabaise) and dessert (creme brulee and baked alaska) were amazing!
  3. Come here for dessert and to see the pretty Lavendar Bar.
  4. The ice cream/sorbet assortment was lovely and the Jack Daniel "cheesecake" was fantastic -- ethereal and light.
  5. The steak tartare tasted like catsup, the short ribs were cold and overseasoned with nutmeg, the key lime pie was an oreo soaked in lime juice.
  6. When my dining partner asked what the waiter would recommend for dessert, the waiter was taken aback saying "everything is perfection", well, everything wasn't perfection and at $200 per person there are dozens if not hundreds of restaurants in Manhattan
drinks
64.28999900817871% positive
  1. Drinks at the bar were good and we were seated right away after the whole party arrived.
  2. Our waiter was so good, when I asked him to write down the wine, he took a label off a bottle, put it on a cafe grey postcard, and laminated it for me.
  3. The bar is also great, with banquettes available on a first come, first served basis, and a full menu is available in there as well.
  4. Ordered wine by the glass in order to sample several varieties - glass was barely 1/4 full - rather dissappointing at $
  5. One of the wait staff (not sure who he was as they have too many) had an attitude as he walked away when we told him the wine still was not cold enough.
  6. The wine list is a little expensive The space is more elegant than I expected and brought down a notch by the huge open kitchen.
  7. It's first-come-first-served in the bar w/ the full dinner menu.
food quality
76.66999816894531% positive
  1. Overall, the meal is quite expensive, but the food is worthy of it.
  2. The food is very tasty but hardly revolutionary and not worth what they are charging.
  3. For appetizers we ordered mushroom risotto, steak tartare and chestnut soup, all very good and started the evening well.
  4. The risotto appetizer was tasty but too filling.
  5. thought the food was quite good.
  6. The steak tartare tasted like catsup, the short ribs were cold and overseasoned with nutmeg, the key lime pie was an oreo soaked in lime juice.
  7. The appetizers(especially the boullabaise) and dessert (creme brulee and baked alaska) were amazing!
  8. Even better, each course was completely delicious.
  9. would recommend the seafood dishes over the meat - the latter tended to be dry.
  10. We still talk about how great the food was, months later.
  11. The chef's flambe of the toast was impressive as flames nearly licked the ceiling adding a sense of professional execution for an open kitchen's theatrical performance.
  12. The food here was great, but it was a little pricey, and the atmosphere wasn't as warm and inviting as it could have been.
  13. Very good german/austrian influenced food with a very cool decor and good service.
  14. All in all it was a fabulous meal!
  15. If you want great food, bad service and a terrible view Café Gray if the place for you.
  16. The service was sooooooooooooo bad that we left in the middle of our meal.
  17. The bread was good.
  18. The sauces are excellent but don't go with the dishes
  19. Horrible dish.
  20. Good food but way overpriced
  21. There is more emphasis on pretty food than edible food (for example the salad that comes as a bunch of leaves standing straight up wrapped in a pastry band with nothing else but a drizzle of dressing).
  22. the appetizers were good and the short ribs were very tasty.
  23. The mushroom risotto, a house specialty, is probably the best I've ever had.
  24. The lamb roulade and the rabbit/foie gras stew were quite good (though the lamb was a little salty--ok for me, but it may bother others).

service
59.650001525878906% positive
  1. This place has the worst floor manager so as I think somebody needs to take care of that.
  2. Our waiter was so good, when I asked him to write down the wine, he took a label off a bottle, put it on a cafe grey postcard, and laminated it for me.
  3. Very good german/austrian influenced food with a very cool decor and good service.
  4. -- service was uncomfortable -- captain seemed to have too many tables, we were "directed" to ask questions to his assistant.
  5. The tables are close together and the wait staff doesn't bother to pull the table out to seat diners, they have to squeeze between the tables.
  6. The waiter was fine, but all the supporting actors were very attentive.
  7. It was the most disgusting experience of eating out in NYC, arrogant service, confused kitchen, a complete mess.
  8. The service was very friendly and attentive, and the view in the afternoon was wonderful.
  9. This will go down as the most disgusting service we have ever received in a NYC restaurant.
  10. Bad experience and worst manager
  11. Impeccable service cannot compensate for poor design and unsubtle flavors
  12. When my dining partner asked what the waiter would recommend for dessert, the waiter was taken aback saying "everything is perfection", well, everything wasn't perfection and at $200 per person there are dozens if not hundreds of restaurants in Manhattan
  13. The service staff, however, was the most attentive I have every experienced.
  14. If you want great food, bad service and a terrible view Café Gray if the place for you.
  15. One of the wait staff (not sure who he was as they have too many) had an attitude as he walked away when we told him the wine still was not cold enough.
  16. The staff was professional and courteous, and anticipated your needs.
  17. The service is professional but not pretentious.
  18. The service was sooooooooooooo bad that we left in the middle of our meal.
  19. First, the atmopshere was far from appealing: not sexy, not inviting and surely not full of beautiful people.

Good food but way overpriced

by lbraverman

You are paying for the view and the location. Food was good, we had the risotto and braised ribs but was overpriced--the appetizer portion of the risotto was $27 (ala carte), and the 3-course price fixe was $65. We passed on the drinks as we felt that $20 should buy a bottle of wine, not a glass. We had a good view of the kitchen and the trees in Columbus Circle. Service was so-so, it was hard to get a waiter's attention when we needed to. Restrooms lacked paper towels.

Elegant and Delightful

by dcintx

Being from Tx and enjoying our first night in NYC we met friends (who live in NYC) after a show for a late dinner at Cafe Gray. The restaurant is tucked away in the Time Warner building as soon as you enter you forget that you passed numerous retail stores to find this place. It was very beautiful inside, relaxing and luxorious at the same time. We had no problems with Service, it was all timely and done with class. Our server's only fault was that he wasn't good about suggesting "specific" dishes, in fact he more or less would list every entree or dessert on the list when you asked him what was good. We all enjoyed our 1st and 2nd courses, I myself loved the Roasted corn ravioli, fabulous! I also had the short rib which was nice, the flavor was very fitting for fall. Our sommelier was attentive and we closed the place down. Enjoyed the ambiance as well as the fare.

  • Pros: Ambience
  • Cons: High Priced

Bad experience and worst manager

by gabriela777

It was my boyfriend birthday and I took him to Cafe Gray. I made reservation a month before but when we arrived we had to wait 20 minutes at the bar. We ordered food and were waiting for a very long time, one of the managers her name was Caron came and ask us if everything is ok. We asked her why it takes so long, she didnt answer our question, she said she needs to check, she was not polite to us, but we were waiting another 15 minutes and she never came back to us, although we saw her passing by our table couple of times. This place has the worst floor manager so as I think somebody needs to take care of that.

Dispassionate service brings down very good food.

by rpnewton

Much has been said about Kunz's food, and it is often exciting and provocative as it was that evening. However, we don't go to restaurants for food alone, and were very disappointed by the detached service. Upon arriving, the host told us that our table was being set and suggested we wait in the bar. A hostess began to lead us down the hallway, halfway down my wife turned off to the restroom. The hostess then turned to me and said the bar "is down the hallway on the left."

We were at the bar for perhaps 5 minutes when the hostess returned to tell us our table was ready. We told her we had just ordered drinks, she replied that she would return in five. Twenty minutes later another host came by to tell us our table was ready. A small but perhaps telling quibble, while at the bar, we were surprised to see the bartender pouring drink mixers out of recycled Ocean Spray containers.

The dining room design is a bit peculiar, with the kitchen between the tables and the view. But what made the experience so much less appealing than it should have been at a high-end restaurant ($380 for two) was the staff's detachment. Our waiter seemed rushed and dispassionate about the food, and never inquired about our dinner or experience. Even the sommelier, although charming, needed a lot more direction from us than I would have expected, and seemed to lack conviction. The sommelier told us that she used to work for B R Guest Restaurants, not surprising because apart the food and high price, the entire experience felt like dining at a B R Guest restaurant.

  • Pros: Interesting menu
