Editorial Review for Megu – by Dana Bowen
The Scene
Every inch of the original Megu (there's a second one in midtown) is meticulously designed in a mix of modern and antique motifs. Porcelain rice-bowl columns teeter high above the auditorium-sized dining area, and a gigantic temple bell suspends over a bottom-lit ice carving. Pampering servers, decked out in haute Japonica, flutter between cavernous leather booths and the long sushi bar. Even the celebs seem impressed.
The Food
The modern, largely organic, high-dollar Japanese menu deserves the drama of its showy setting. The kitchen abandons courses in favor of shared plates: first, yuzu-doused micro-greens and flower petals; next, bonito-rich edamame puree. Raw fish--from buttery uni sushi to glistening toro tartare--is exceedingly fresh. So are cooked plates: Marinated Kobe beef practically melts on its skewers, soy-buttered scallops collapse with sweet brine and Chawanmushi custard, quivering in eel-soy broth with black truffles and foie gras, is over the top.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkThe wine list includes $40-$60 reislings, Gruner Veltliners and gewurtztraminers, which pair well with the food. Don't overlook the exhaustive sake and sochu list.
Where to SitThe 75-seat upstairs bar, wallpapered with bolts of antique kimono fabrics is more serene. Three large lounge tables overlook the scene below, and there's a private room for parties.

We were visiting from Norway, and this restaurant was recommended from a local friend - and we went on September 27, 2008. We'd heard it was a bit expensive, but to our surprise our waiter (when we asked for his advice) helped us find suitable things to eat that was not too bad. We had two starters, sashimi plate with mixed rice, and dessert. We had Champagne in the bar and Sake for the meal. We were surprised the whole thing didn't cost us more than 120 dollars each. (In Norway, the same type of food at a similar restaurant would cost you almost 200 dollars per person) We enjoyed the restaurant, the interior was great! It was big, but yet private. We didn't mind all the stairs. I gave us a feeling of beeing in a maze. Funny. But we especially liked our sweet, male waiter. He was funny, helpful and understanding. He also agreed on posing in a photograph with us (we were, as I said, visiting from Norway...). A great memory. We had been to Tao two days before, and this was more a place I could have brought my parents - and they would have loved it!
Pros: Service, interior, food, ambience
Cons: Had to wait 40 minutes for our table, although we had reservation

Had a bunch of sushi/sashimi, which was fresh but nothing too special, and the foie gras kobe beef croquettes - which were so good with a great flavor that melts in your mouth. Also had the kobe beef on the river stone and the wild sea bass - both were good, but nothing extraoridinary. I'd go back for the croquettes in a heart beat.
