Editorial Review for Julep – by Raven Snook
The Scene
It's the kind of place where the bartenders greet you with a shout, a smile and lots of cleavage. This friendly one-room watering hole serves up two of the three Southern basics: beer and blues. (They no longer serve barbecue.) The pool table and TV, usually tuned to sports, complements the homey, no-frills atmosphere. Julep attracts an unsceney crowd of mature locals and after-work revelers looking to grab a beer without having to worry if they're wearing this season's shoes.
The Draw
The 30-plus beer menu offers Southern-themed brews like Lone Star and Dixie. While there's no live blues, you'll find an adequate collection in the jukebox. The staff offers Southern hospitality, although with the Ramones blaring in the background and patrons sporting heavy coats come wintertime, you won't forget that you're north of the Mason-Dixon line.

I'm part of a weekly Wednesday drinking group of 30 or so regulars who love to drink, geek out, talk and eat after work. We check out a different bar each week. We've been kicking around the city for 12 years. In that time we've visited several hundred bars (with repeats of faves). Finding standout bars are what make me happy to trek out to bar after bar, week after week. Julep certainly claimed a small piece of my heart. Wednesday night is strip twister night on the small stage for exotic dancers in the basement. Two girls strip down to pasties and undies for tips collected by bucket. I'm a mid-30s chick, who blushes, but it usually takes a lot. I got a little rosy cheeked. The emcee's comic approach to calling the twister play-by-play was so much fun, I was cracking up throughout the entire "entertainment" portion of the evening. In the mood for a little grit with your booze? I'd recommend Julep. The tending staff was great.
Pros: Eclectic ambiance, Good Service
Cons: Limited Beer Selection

Julep is a great place to get your groove on in the middle of the week, especially on Tuesdays. Resident DJ NRG really knows how to get a crowd moving with his ecelctic mix of rock/electronica/80's/nu-wave. He takes requests, and has almost ANY song you're in the mood to dance to. It's a fun, relaxed atmosphere and bartender (Drinkmistress) Bobbie can pour some really tasty concoctions!
