Great hideaway!. A few friends and I wanted a quick "vacation without leaving the city" for a weekend and I happened upon the Alex as I was strolling back to work after a liquid lunch during a long day. Boy what a find! The rooms are contemporary, but comfortable and roomy. We ended up getting 2 suites and having a great time. The staff was attentive but not invasive, even when we had a few "celebs" drop by. I highly recommend this place!!!

Sleepless in New York. The hotel itself is nice - very New York - call it the W Light. Lobby is very small. I was in a studio suite - decent sized room. Very clean. But here's the problem: the hotel only has the ability to run the heat or air conditioning. It's December, so I understand their choice of running heat. As a result, however, I could not get my room under 78 degrees. At all. I called the front desk (which was VERY responsive to my concerns, so that's a plus) and they sent the maintenance guy up. He told me the best I could do was open the window. The window opens about 3 inches. And the drapes blew OUT! So I was heating Manhattan with 78 degree air, but not changing the air temperature of my room. I barely slept for three nights because my room was like a sauna.

Positives and Negatives. The Alex has the makings of a fine hotel, but cannot fully deliver on what it promises. The lobby is pleasant, but the staff is not extremely accomodating. The downtown Ritx has much better service. The rooms are very small, but stylish. The bed is fairly comfortable but not quite as good as that at the Sheraton tower. Something in the next room caused the heaboard to vibrate. The air conditioning wasn't working. On the positive side, there was high speed internet. The shower was ok. The kitchen was a nice touch. The location caanot be beat. In the end though, I would rather stay elsewhere next time.

Not worth it. Stayed here for one night -- glad it wasn't more than that. Hotel is way overpriced for what you (don't) get. Very bland room with no art decor -- ugly 70s sofa with uncomfortable low back. Hotel indicated it offered complimentary bottled water. There was no such thing -- just a refridgerator full of drinks you could have if you wanted to pay an arm and a leg. Bathroom way too small -- hated the shower, but bed was very comfortable.

Very chic, comfortable, classy. The lobby is very mall and the room is not enormous but everything is very elegantly designed, modern, and chic. The room has a full kitchen with microwave, there's T1 internet connection, flat screen TV with DVD player and CD player, nice bathroom, everything is really clean.

In the heart of downtown Manhattan, close to everything where all the action is. If you can afford it, you won't be disappointed!

Worth Every Penny!. The prices may be on the high end, but you get what you pay for ~ QUALITY. My last of many stay's at the Alex, proved to be consistant. The service is right where it should be. Polite, Professional, but not over the top. You can relax w/o feeling bothered. Flat screen TV's, georgous comfortable bed, excellent sushi restaurant in the lobby. CHECK OUT THE ROOM PACKAGES for some nice alternatives.

This 33-story hotel, opened in the fall of 2003, has the cachet of a top-tier design by David Rockwell. Bamboo plants, translucent partitions and a sleek fireplace decorate the small lobby, which adjoins the bi-level American-Japanese restaurant Riingo. Corporate and extended-stay travelers make up a large number of guests, with families and leisure travelers on the weekends.

The Details
A feng shui balance informs the 70 rooms and 133 suites, which all have floor-to-ceiling windows and are decorated with warm woods, chocolate drapes and a cream-colored settee. The custom-designed furnishings include triple-sheeted beds with Frette linens, flip-out nightstands on casters and covered entertainment and business centers that feature a flat-screen TV, CD/DVD player and T-1 connection. Bathrooms are limestone with rainfall showerheads, and the suites contain Poggenpohl kitchens. Guests have 24-hour access to the fitness room, which is staffed by a personal trainer mornings and evenings.
