Editorial Review for Marquee Night Club – by Erin Behan

The Scene
There's a bit of a boys' club feeling about the posh space, designed by the big-name architectural firm of Philip Johnson and Alan Ritchie. A glass-bead chandelier lights up the dramatic main room, which is accented by dark, polished wood on all sides and sprawling banquette seating. At the back, a pyramid-like staircase leads to a soundproof, glassed-in, second-floor lounge overlooking the vaulted main room. Show up with fashionable friends in tow--everyone in the youngish crowd seems to know each other.

The Draw
Marquee, designed with high-class entertaining in mind, has small touches that elevate it over other lounges, such as drawers tucked underneath banquettes for personal storage. However, once the evening heats up, nobody seems to notice the subtleties, instead patrons skip straight to the bar for strong top-shelf cocktails and then off to an impromptu--but fully legal--dance floor sandwiched between banquettes.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

A lower-level bar provides a touch of red and a little peace and quiet. You'll want to reserve a banquette on weekend nights.

What to Drink

Specialty cocktails include the house margarita made with Tesoro Platinum tequila and a mojito made with Ron Zacapa Centenario rum.

Me and my two girlfriends were in NYC for the weekend from LA and we all went to Marquee on a Thursday night, recommended by the W Hotel. We pulled up at about 12:30 and the line was almost as long as the block and equally as rowdy. We quickly got in the front, but people were crazy pushing and shoving, not to mention the girls were equally as catty and obnoxious, which was later taken care of. Tip: If you stay in line, dont push or be obnoxious by pushing, and make friends with the bouncers, you'll be played as a favorite adn get in before anyone else, which is what we did. However, we weren't aware of the 20 DOLLAR cover charge. I've never had to pay cover charge. If you're a girl, just remark at how crazy the 20 dollar cover charge is and turn around and maybe we were just lucky, but some guy went and got us free passes (all the bouncers have them- they're just white slips of paper). So we got into Marquee for free and the atmosphere was great, the main floor had Hip Hop and we danced until 3:30 in the morning. We didnt' even think of asking how much a drink costs, but we were lucky and got some free drinks from guys guarding their tables with vodka bottles. All in all, if youre looking for a "exclusive"- and i mean in a kind of snooty, think-ur-famous kindof way, go to marquee. but really, if you're just looking for a place that you know will be crowded and have a good DJ, wich is why we went there, just go for a good time... but when you're in the line out front, 1 word: RELAX, because remember that it IS new york, and people won't move out of the way.

Pros: Good DJs, nice people, free passes

Cons: cover charge, rowdy line

I moved to NY 6 months ago and I did explore the NY club scene quite a bit and this club is average. We knew that the wait at the door would be long, and we were planning to go with a group of 4 girls and 4 guys, so we reserved a table on the phone up-front. When we got to the club the line was huge but given that our names were on the list we got straight in. Pricing/first impression: At the cashier they told us that you have to buy two bottles per table. Menu ranges from 350 to 9000 USD per bottle. We knew that before so we agreed hands down. The staff was friendly and we were guided to our table. What we didn't know and nobody told us at that point was that one table only sits four people! So if we wanted to sit 8 than we would have to buy two or three more bottles?! Not a big deal if you know that before you agree to get table service, but definitly a rip-off scam if you only learn about it when they already charged your credit card! The host said "what's the drama, it's not a restaurant?" Service: You get charged 20 percent gratuity but the hostess only serves you the first round. When you get up dancing or wander arround to explore the club your table and your drinks are not looked after. So anybody can come and take your seats and your drinks which happend to us too. The clubs above average have bouncers taking care of that for you. Not so in Marquee. The club: The club has a huge bar, a sleek design, three dancefloors, good music. However, nothing but the drummer playing to the house music that stands out. The crowd/party feel: Most people seemed relaxed, friendly and in a party mood. Celebrities, models? No! Average party crowd with some pretty and well dressed people and others where you had to wonder how the hell they got passed the door? Our party feeling was overshadowed by too much drama. Summary: Would you pay the price of a Porsche and wait for you car as long as for a cutomized BMW, if all you get is a Chevi Malibu?

Pros: the speakers work and the DJ does his job

Cons: service, host
