Editorial Review for Maritime Hotel – by Karen Hudes
The Scene
Taking advantage of its unique modernist architecture--originally designed as the headquarters of the National Maritime Union in 1966--this hotel turns its exterior portholes into five-foot windows for each of its 125 cabin-like rooms. The owners apply this nautical theme to every detail, including the lush marine blue of the lobby carpet, the couches' white piping and the teak room furnishings with custom latches. The entertainment industry is prominent among its clientele.
The Details
Rooms average 300 square feet, and have beds with custom Japanese fabric headboards and 300-thread-count sheets. They also include a flat-screen TV, CD/DVD player, video-game console and complimentary Wi-Fi connection, and a marble and tile bathroom with a waterfall showerhead. On-premises are the luminous Matsuri sushi restaurant, Hiro lounge and La Bottega cafe and trattoria, as well as the most outdoor space--10,000 square feet--of any hotel in the city.

From management to the maid service, staff were exceptionally helpful and polite - a pleasant surprise in NY for an out of town visitor. Food and nightlife were awesome, and the ambiance is great. The maritime theme is a real departure from the surrounding city.

I really felt like I was on a cruise ship during my stay at the Maritime. The entire staff donned nautical duds, and in true cruise ship fashion, the hotel room was as small as a ship's cabin. Besides feeling a little clastrophobic, I was fine. Luckily, I didn't get seasick and only stayed one night. But the social scene at the hotel is bustling. The bars are hopping, the food is delicious, and I want to come back soon to try the sushi place, too.
Pros: Staff sends me x-mas cards
Cons: Small quarters
