Editorial Review for Sugar Sweet Sunshine – by Allison Austin

The Scene
On the block between uber-chic Schiller's and 'Inoteca, this little bakery is a breath of unassuming fresh air. The furniture is old and mismatched, the walls are bare and the baker is the counter person, the espresso puller and also the person who'll ring up your order.

The Food
The owners used to work at Magnolia Bakery, so naturally there's going to be talk about who makes the best cupcakes. These are pretty good: The vanilla cake is superior to the chocolate, and the chocolate icing is superior to the vanilla. But what's surprising is the pumpkin spice cupcake--the cake itself is extra-moist and excellent. A selection of whole tarts, cookies, cakes and cakes by-the-slice is available in flavors like orange, pistachio, red velvet and devil's food. The muffins and coffee cakes are fine, though they might benefit from a bit of salt.

I live in the neighbourhood and I frequent this joint at least 3 times a week. I work in a hospital planning events for medical students, patients, and faculty and I work 12-14 hours a day. This morning (7:50am, as it's my only free time) on my way to work I stopped by to get some info about ordering for big events, but I was shocked and appalled by the treatment and behaviour of one of the owners. I apologised for bothering her and I politely asked her for a minute of her "precious" time. She kept cutting me off before I even got a word out and she asked me to leave in a very rude manner. In fact, she shooed me away like I'm some kind of animals. You don't even treat animals this way. Even the flour/sugar delivery guys was appalled and rolled his eyes at her nasty behaviour. I understand that she may be having a bad day, but this is not the way to treat people, especially your customers. At first I didn't believe any rude service reviews written here, but people it's 100% true! Shame on you! I know that you're making tons of money and you probably don't care much about making more money off me, but your behaviour is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. I seriously advice people in the LES to boycott this establishment as it's not welcome in the neighbourhood.

Great moist but not too sweet cupcakes! I did not get to try them all but they four varieties I did try were all spectacular. About the customer service...while I was there someone who placed a special order on rush without notifying the baker came in to pick up her cake. Even they were accommodating the customer, the cake was just out of the oven and frosting it would be difficult as the baker explained. The customer was still mad and proceeded to rant and demand her money back which the owner gladly did. What do people expect from customer service? If they are quick, accurate and pleasant that is good service. These people are expected to be uber friendly, charming, witty, entertaining and extremely accommodating or else customers are quick to get huffy???
