The Scene – Some speculate that when Italian pizza chefs left Manhattan for the outer boroughs and 'burbs, they took the best slice spots with them. Thankfully, this Long Island pizzaman commutes into his cheery Greenwich Village pizza joint to repair that image. The brightly-lit takeout spot with a few non-descript tables and chairs looks like any other, but it tastes ten times more homespun. – – The Food – The secret to the superb "Nonna Maria" pie rests in the owner's grandmother's thin-crusted Tuscan recipe. Hand-pulled, yeasty dough, baked on a bed of crusty…

amazing pizza

by nyceatsman

Went there because of all the hype (picked best pizza by food network Jimmy Kimmel et. al.) expecting to be disappointed. I can happily say that I may have had the best slice I have ever had- although I was slightly inebriated the first time my return trips are confirmation. I highly recommend the fresh mozzarella slice and the grandma slice. perfect crisp crust (I finished it all) and mouth watering dollops of yummy sauce.

great pizza, terribly rude staff

by p6567

i live in the neighborhood and get pizza here regularly. i only continue to go because the pizza happens to be really good, but the guys who work there barely acknowledge you when you are standing right in front of them. it's as if they think they are above you, which is kinda bizarre considering they are working behind a counter at a pizza place!

  • Pros: yummy pizza
  • Cons: rude staff

Better Than A Typical Street Corner Pizzeria, But Not Comparable To Patsy's Or Totonno's

by nycinephile

Five members of Meetup?s Thrifty Gourmets group and I field-tested Bleecker St Pizza on Tuesday, August 12, 2008. Although an employee of the pizzeria had repeatedly assured me before our visit that it could accommodate my group, space in the restaurant was actually very limited. Luckily, one of the countermen allowed me to claim a table before my fellow diners? arrival. He and his co-workers did not greet me when I arrived. They were a bit brusque, but outgoing. I had to jostle with other patrons to get their attention. Because there were no waiters, I ordered our pies at the counter. We were allowed, surprisingly, to take affordably priced beers and sodas from the refrigerated case with an implied promise that we would pay for them. Our pies were ready within 15-20 minutes and were delivered by a friendly employee who joked with us. They were prepared with fresh, but not outstanding, ingredients. The slices that I tasted were better than those found at a typical street corner pizzeria, but not comparable to those I?ve had at Patsy?s or Totonno?s. I did like their crispy crust, though. Pies at Bleecker Street are about $20 each, and imported beers are $3.50.

  • Pros: Outgoing employees; affordably priced bottled beer; nicely cripy crust
  • Cons: Limited space;

The Details on Bleecker Street Pizza

Know Before You Go:

Fresh mozzarella loses its milky charm in transit, so it's best to order the regular pie to go; savor the specialty ones, made with fresh mozzarella, in-house.

The Extras:

Every day, the cooks prepare a long list of hero sandwiches, from sausage and peppers to chicken parmesan.
