The Scene
You can't miss this scene from the sidewalk: windowed garage doors wrap around a gigantic industrial dining room, where black-clad bartenders pour wine into short-stemmed glasses and fashionable diners chat around schoolhouse tables and chairs. It's loud and fun, with casual service that's refreshingly serious about the food.
The Food
The menu fuses Waxman's seasonal aesthetic, honed at Chez Panisse and Jam's in California, with rich and rustic Italian country cooking. It's a smart match, yielding the likes of shaved asparagus salad, sharp with pecorino vinaigrette, lightly dressed wild arugula with velvety chicken liver bruschetta and delicate braised rabbit with tiny, spicy penne. But the real shining stars include any entree emerging from the wood-burning oven--sea bass is beautifully tender; fava pesto-slathered scallop skewers are buttery and sweet; and rosy lamb, perfection with spring peas. The dark-chocolate pudding is among the best in its class.

Went this past Saturday. Arrived at 930pm for a 945pm reservation. Still no table after an hour and hostesses had nothing but stock phrases an an explanation. Needless to say, we left WITHOUT EATING mainly because the bartender was inattentive and rude. When I called him out on it, there was No "I'm sorry" nor "This one's on me". Frankly, he didn't seem to care one bit. All we got was $106 bill for what was arguably good wine but HORRIBLE SERVICE. We went to Tortilla Flats instead and had a great time.

I had a great dinner there with friends the other night. We ordered a bunch of thins to share and had a nice bottle of rose. The waitress was very nice and the service was great. I would go back and try their ever changing menu again.

Great scene and location but food surprisingly disappointing! First two visits, the food was amazing. Last two in the past 2 months were disappointing. if you are looking for great flavor and consistency, go elsewhere. Our waitress suggested the appetizers which were far less interesting and enjoyable compared to how they were described. The octopus salad was grossly overcooked (they still charged us for it eventhough we didn't touch it and returned it). The waiter recommended a wine after we described what we were looking for. Way off. Thank goodness for the next waitress who not only suggested a far better 2nd bottle of wine (in the same price range) but also took off the salad off of our bill after we asked. The pastas were superior (but not by much) to the fish dishes were not interesting whatsoever. Overall, outstanding vibe/scene; good for dates. But if you are looking for great food, I would pass immediately relative to the past!!

What to Drink:
The wine list is short but stellar, with many inexpensive Italian varietals, like rich, ruby Aglianico ($32), which pairs well with the food. Glass options include interesting blends, like a reisling-gewurtztraminer mix.
Where to Sit:
The chef's table, separated from the dining room by a low partition, is just an arm's-length away from the small open kitchen and blazing oven. If no one has reserved it, you can ask to sit there at no extra charge.
