What Our Expert Scouts Say

November 11, 2012

Jonathan Waxman, though not a name to conjure with anymore, is still a true chef's chef and a giant in New York cooking history. His current restaurant, Barbuto, features superb simple American food (particularly a famous roast chicken) in a former garage on a beautiful corner.

Outstanding. My girlfriend took me to Barbuto for my birthday last night. We were very impressed.

Try the braised rabbit or braised veal. Both were killer.

The torta dessert is a perfect capper. And the chocolate pudding, which was more of a ganache, was also terrific.

Just a very impressive dinner on a Sunday night. Go there and enjoy yourself.

NEVER GOT A TABLE ... Went next door instead. Useless and rude bartender.. Went this past Saturday. Arrived at 930pm for a 945pm reservation. Still no table after an hour and hostesses had nothing but stock phrases an an explanation.

Needless to say, we left WITHOUT EATING mainly because the bartender was inattentive and rude. When I called him out on it, there was No "I'm sorry" nor "This one's on me". Frankly, he didn't seem to care one bit. All we got was $106 bill for what was arguably good wine but HORRIBLE SERVICE. We went to Tortilla Flats instead and had a great time.

Great food, nice staff. I had a great dinner there with friends the other night. We ordered a bunch of thins to share and had a nice bottle of rose. The waitress was very nice and the service was great. I would go back and try their ever changing menu again.

Great vibe, food overrated. Great scene and location but food surprisingly disappointing! First two visits, the food was amazing. Last two in the past 2 months were disappointing. if you are looking for great flavor and consistency, go elsewhere. Our waitress suggested the appetizers which were far less interesting and enjoyable compared to how they were described. The octopus salad was grossly overcooked (they still charged us for it eventhough we didn't touch it and returned it). The waiter recommended a wine after we described what we were looking for. Way off. Thank goodness for the next waitress who not only suggested a far better 2nd bottle of wine (in the same price range) but also took off the salad off of our bill after we asked. The pastas were superior (but not by much) to the fish dishes were not interesting whatsoever. Overall, outstanding vibe/scene; good for dates. But if you are looking for great food, I would pass immediately relative to the past!!

Famous Roast Chicken - overrated. Crowded, noisey. Waited 25 minutes for the "famous" chicken. It came with nothing. Tender and juicy but with little taste. Overpriced for chicken. Go there if you like the scene but skip the chicken.

always a great time. I have read the other reviews on here and it is almost like these people were eating somewhere else. I have eaten dinner and come for drinks many times and i have always had a great time. the food is always good, the wait staff always reccommended something tasty and the wine list....spectacular. i cant understand the negative reviews.....seriously this place has always been good to me.

Inconsistent service, good food, but lousy bar service, avoid busy nights, lunches are better. I have been coming to Barbuto for years. Lunches - terrific service, excellent food. Dinners, forget it.

I went on a hot Tuesday night, and though there were eight empty tables, we were told we would have to wait 30 minutes. Seemed odd. So, we went to the bar to have a drink while we waited. One bartender was there trying to service both the busy wait staff AND attend to his very packed bar. Not a good choice to aehv only one bartender on a busy night with that size bar. Who ever does scheduling should rethink summer evenings. This bartender, if in fact he was one and not some bar-back filling in... was doing a truly spectacular job at being the worst bartender ever. And I say this with sympathy because I have bartended and waitressed, and I understand that it is not an easy job. However, if you are good at what you do -ACKNOWLEDGE your custmers! We can see you are buy - but a nod, or a "how are you? be right with you?" goes A LONG way. Does he understand this is HIS bar, HIS customers that he should want to take care of so they come back to see him and TIP!?? Thats how it works! He is going to get better tips from his bar customers than from his waitstaff. I honestly wish I would have gotten his name, because I would have written him a personal letter. You have people at the bar with empty glasses, you have 2 people who have a half hour wait, who have now waited over 10 to 15 minutes for him to stop fiddling with the bread baskets and just ask what we would like! We finally got up and left. did not stay for dinner and went and spent our money elsewhere. Perhaps he is just the novice Tuesday night bartender - but the place was packed, and he was slowly plodding around tinkering with silverwear instead of serving his customers.

This says as much about Barbutos training of staff as it does about this particular bartender.

on a good note - when you can get served, the food is good.

OK, this isn't fair.... Reading these reviews made me realize that only the pretentious, jaded individuals make comments on citisearch, so I thought I would be one of the few who's not the same. I have been going to Barbuto for the past 3 years, since they opened practically, and at one point I went multiple times a week. I have had AMAZING MEALS, FREINDLY SERVICE, and love every dollar I have ever spent there. I've taken business associates, friends, and relatives and have always wowed everyone who ever has gone with me. Granted, I've been there so many times, that I can't say I haven't had ONE average meal, but trust me when I say that this place IS WORTH THE TRIP. It's a shame that only the few negative people might make others believe this place isn't worth the trip. Better for me on getting a reservation, though!!!

Don't let the garage door slam you in the head. I was very excited to take a client to your restaurant last night. I had made a reservation at 7pm, arrived on time and we were seated out side. We ordered our cocktails and the assorted cheeses. When it arrived the waiter told us that we needed to order immediately, which I found odd considering we had not even put a piece of cheese in our mouths. We ordered as he hovered over us, and than in the next 15 minutes the busboy tried 3 times to take our cheese away, Our meals were than brought to the table while we were still on our appetizers and the waiter told us we had"10 minutes to finish our dinner". Shocked I asked him why? And he answered that, in 10 minutes they would be closing the garage door, and we would be the only ones left on the sidewalk. In exactly 10 minutes the doors were closed {although it was a beautiful evening} and we were left on the sidewalk peering into the restaurant like two miserable outcasts, trying to eat as fast as we could. We were than told if we wanted coffee or dessert we were to move to another table-but there were none available!! I was so embarrassed and insulted, that I paid the $150.00 check and left.

I eat out several nights a week with allot of my clients, and I have never experienced such rude demeaning behavior. With all the competition in New York for great dining, I will never return to your restaurant, and will let my clients and friends know that if they want to "scarf a $150.00 meal down in 10 minutes, and have a garage door slammed in their faces -you certainly are the dining destination"!

Horrendous Service Mediocre Food (at best). I would say it was one of the worst meals I have had in Manhattan in quite some time (regarldless of price). The waitress was incredibly rude and could not answer any questions. When I asked to have my order slightly modified I was told the kitchen gets too angry when she asks. I then spoke to the manager who was equally unhelpful. I was served raw/undercooked fish, someone else got fatty hangar steak. When I showed my fish to the waitress, she agreed it was undercooked and then was ready to walk away. When I asked her to take it away, she did not apologize or offer to bring me something else. We were left for large periods of time without anyone offering drinks, bread, dessert or other typical services. I had eaten there once before and things were slightly better but things have deteriorated considerably.
