The Scene
In a glowing candlelit space the size of a studio apartment, diners on dates and small groups sit snugly on wooden banquettes. Distressed walls and a coved roof give the dining room a lived-in feel; despite the draft from the front door, it's pleasant and cozy. Service is eager to please but can be sparse during a rush.
The Food
The menu runs from rustic Italian to loosely interpreted French classics. Start with an order of the croquettes--salt cod, ham and cheese rolled into balls and deep fried until melty and golden brown, or one of the pizzas, cooked in the wood fireplace and sparingly topped with cheeses, the thin crusts nicely charred. Among entrees, the sea bass, bright with lemon and fennel, is the best choice. The cassoulet is heavier on the meat than most, boasting a leg of duck confit, sausage, pork and more. Choose the warm pear beignets for dessert.

August has ambiance nailed down. Romantic and cozy without being over the top. Immediate comfort as you walk in the door. Service is friendly without pretense, and the food is fabulous. Definitely one of the best in the west village!

I am giving this restaurant 5 stars for its 5 star service and 5 star food. I went for the first time yesterday for dinner and had such an amazing experience I must find a reason to go back soon. I had the pimenton mussels to start and the beef for my entree. Both were delicious. Mmm. This is a restuarant in the city that you must try at least once.

My husband and I walked into this little place, and the hostess immediately asked us if we'd like a table in the back. The back? We had no idea. We walked back to this area that looked like a little secret garden. How perfect. The food was perfect, and really reasonable. This place was the perfect brunch for our last day in NYC!
