What Our Expert Scouts Say

March 14, 2013

A lovely, romantic restaurant that has only gotten better in its ten years on Bleecker Street. Understated and underhyped but first-rate.

Sitting in the glass enclosed patio, surrounded by organic elements is lovely. Wood-fired roasted chicken, green beans with garlic, and crisp fries. Impeccable service.

A New Fav!. I walked in on a colder rainy night, and only had to wait about 15 minutes before getting a table. The food and wine were outstanding! Very cozy atmosphere, although the place is a little on the smaller side. Only bad thing to say is the flight of stairs down to the bathroom tested my repelling/moutaineering skills... ONLY TRY IT SOBER!!!

I recommend the Tarte for an appetiser and the Pepper Steak for the main dish... was too full to try anything else.

Great Date Place!!!

Reputation is severly proceeding..... I was trying to arrange a nice pre-christmas datenight. I'm a foodie and have plenty of industry buds who noted, despite being around for a minute, the place is cute and the food is good. I read the reviews and thought I would book a reservation anyway. 2 days before the actual reservation, they called to confirm for the wrong evening. When I told them the correct night, they said it was going to be a problem. (Um, glad you called?) I settled for another evening, only to receive another call with the wrong reservation information AGAIN! I dropped it. If you cant get a res right (twice), the reviews are starting to read like theyre not far off. If you try it, maybe you're better avoiding the reservation process...

brunch was ok. I had brunch there today for the first time. The prices were fine and not outrageous and the service was acceptable but nothing above that. Definitely the ambiance was rustic, quant, and had a sort of country, cozy, personality...very homey like...which i liked. I ordered the ham, egg, and cheese crepe and it was excellent, my wife had the german pancake which was only ok. I'd definitely go back, because I also love that part of town.

Apparently customers have no choice here. The wine, appetizers and atmosphere were great. The service was digusting and the entrees were totally under-cooked. We asked why they were cooked so rare (pork chop and steak) and instead of taking them back - or even offering to, the waiter said "because the chef thinks this is the appropriate temperature" and walked away. When he brought the check ($230.00) I again said that we were REALLY disappointed given that we barely touched our entrees and he said "it's too bad you have your check because we would've offered you a free dessert." We had really high expectations for this restaurant, but realize, if we wanted good food and service, we probably should've just gone to Cookshop, our faithful standby.

BAD FOOD, BAD SERVICE, EXPENSIVE BILL - They dont care. we were excited to try August and it sucked! the octopus flatbread ($16) had 4 small pieces of octopus. The lamb chops was the greasiest thing i have ever eaten. The whole fish was dry and was about 4 bites in total. It took one hour and 15 minutes to receive our entree...

The service is worse than the food - the waiter never checked on us. Didnt comp us anything after we complained and the bill was $150. I am now going to get a slice of pizza to fill up.

I can not see how anyone thinks this place is good!!!!!

Rude staff and mixed review of the food. Ambience is nice in the garden. Staff was impatient and sour, unable to accomodate even the smallest requests off the menu (including "melted butter" or "sliced lemon"which were needed to make the food palatable) !! The food was fair to ok...my artichoke was dry and tasteless but the trout was good, on the whole very inconsistent. There is little attention to detail, for instance the bathrooms were unkempt and a peek of the kitchen downstairs was scary!

SOOO Salty!!!. Word of caution - anyone with high blod pressure or heart issues, stay away from August. We could not drink enough water, and still left feeling parched. The ambiance is cute, and service good, but the chef certainly does have a heavy hand with the salt. $190 later, we were totally let down.

Tart Flame was awsome. I like the character of this place. Very warm and inviting unlike many restaurants with great food. Had the tart flambe and it was awsome to say the least- simple, flavorful, awsome. I will be going back.

Charming Bistro - Amazing Food!. August is adorable! I'd only been to August for brunch - which i'm addicted to - and I decided to try it for dinner this past Thursday with an out of town friend. We had such a lovely time, and I'm so glad I finally did it. The food was scrumptious, - we started with an outrageous bacon and onion flatbread tart that was out of this world. We shared the rabbit (they have another name for it on the menu, I can't remember what it was called ) and the trout - which was like a sandwich with vegetables and melon inbetween 2 pieces of trout - wow!! we are chocoholics we we couldn't pass up their chocolate creme dessert- we had such a great time and our waiter made excellent food and wine recommendations - i had to be rolled out, but i have a new addiction!

Extraordinary!!. I don't normally post reviews, but felt so compelled after my evening at August tonight for restaurant week - usually i expect restaurant week menus to be supbar to the regular menu - but I was so blown away by my options tonight at August and both me and my guest devoured our food - to start i had lamb meatballs, a greek dish with a yummy salad of bulgur and parsley and my friend had corn and mushrooms that were cooked in this paper pouch - it was fresh and delicious as summer produce should be! I had the bluefish as an entree (to die for) and she had oxtail stuffed i n zucchini and she practically licked her plate - the desserts were scrumptious. The servious was warm and gracious, I felt more like I was at a good friends house rather than a restaurant and my server made excellent wine recommendations. I've rarely had that kind of service in nyc. I will definitely be back and will bring all my friends (especially those I want to impress w/ my find!_
