What People Are Saying About Wolfgang's Steakhouse
The Owner
Wolfgang's Steakhouse
Owner
After 4 decades of experience, it is fair to say that Wolfgang Zwiener learned his craft well. Taking the core principles from his years as Peter Luger's head waiter, Wolfgang didn't just duplicate an exceptional steakhouse, he improved upon it, making Wolfgang's Steakhouse extraordinary. Not only does Wolfgang's serve phenomenal porterhouse steak (for one, two, four or more), but the atmosphere, the expanded menu, the service and the accessibility of the locations is appealing to even the most exacting diners. Wolfgang's flag ship location, 4 Park Avenue, has enjoyed a full house since the day that it opened. And now, Wolfgang's is pleased to add a downtown location in TriBeCa at 409 Greenwich Street.

The Scene
It's owned by long-time Peter Luger head waiter Wolfgang Zwiener and it shows, in everything but the elaborate Guastavino-tiled ceilings and white linens. There's a profusion of jeans and shirtsleeves, and an unmistakeable and enticing aroma of charred beef. Service is experienced but often rushed.
The Food
The prime steaks, which are dry aged in the basement for 28 days, are the overwhelming draw. The restaurant serves sliced porterhouse for two, three or four on sizzling platters a la Luger, but it's the filet mignon that's the best bet, since the steak arrives whole on a warm--not hot--plate and therefore doesn't overcook at the table. Don't miss a platter of cottage fries--thick, large and warm freshly fried potato slices--and be sure to order the creamed spinach as a side, but skip the generic, bland Caesar salad. Desserts, such as cheesecake and Key lime pie, are standard.

I had reservations and had to wait 20 minutes. The bar was very crowded and they stuck us by the front door with 2 children. It was very uncomfortable and quite upsetting. Once finally seated, we placed our order. The service was good, but very unfriendly. We ordered the rib eye, porterhouse for 2 and the tuna. Both rib eye and porterhoise was good, nothing special. I've had bigger and better rib eye. The tuna was bland and boring, no sauces with it, just a hunk of blah looking tuna on a plate...my wife hardly touched it. Mozzarella and tomato- mozz. was good, tomatoes were hard and tasteless, obviously not ripe. Creamed spinach was bland and the german potatoes were burnt. Overall- the food was not very enjoyable, the servicers need a lesson in being friendly. Don't bother to make a reservation because they will make you wait anyway.

Hard to believe the difference between this location and downtown. If you want a great experience do not bother going here - head downtown. Not only is the food prep better you get service with a smile

Request a table in the open, airy front room; the tiny dining room in back lacks the grandeur and people-watching of the main dining room.
