“This meal will not come cheap, but nothing good ever really does.”
“Our server was excellent and quick, since we told her how hungry we were.”
No bang for the buck. Shots fired, and missed! With the mixed reviews, we decided to try this place out and hope for the best. What we got was a rude server and food that was not worth anywhere near what it cost us! They did have a nice wine list so the night wasn't a complete loss.
Below Average NYC Steakhouse.
Let me preface this by saying that my friends and I get together every couple of months to try a different NYC steakhouse. We have been doing this for about three years and I can honestly say that BLT Steak would rank near the bottom.
First off our reservation was for 8:30 PM. We were not seated until 9:10 PM. Okay, I understand that we were a group of 10 and sometimes with a larger group these things happen. It would have been nice if they apologized and offered a complimentary drink but whatever, we were having drinks at the bar so all was well.
We ordered our appetizers as soon as we were seated. I must admit that the bread they brought to our table was absolutely delicious and we thought this was a sign of things to come. When the appetizers arrived we all felt the bacon was very good and the shrimp cocktail was pretty standard. The Caesar salad was what you would expect from a decent diner. We were all finished with the appetizers at approximately 9:40 and we subsequently had to wait until 10:30 to be served our main course. We asked several waiters and hosts to check on our food and we were given the stock answer "it will be a few minutes". I mean waiting that long between courses was unacceptable. On top of that the waiter is giving us some lame excuse about how he can't put in the steak order until the appetizers have been cleared off the table and it takes about a half hour to cook a steak.....blah, blah, blah There is nothing worse then being lied to with a bogus excuse. Just tell us I am sorry for the delay gentleman but it will be worth the wait or something like. We were very easy going and polite the whole time. Just be honest.
Anyway, when the steaks and sides arrive it was definitely not worth the wait. I shared a porterhouse for to with a friend and you couldn't even tell the difference in texture between the strip and filet side. Despite ordering our Porterhouse medium rare meat was extremely chewy. You pay $84 for you you believe is the best cuts of beef. There is no way that this represented the top 3% or 4% of beef in the country. I bought a porterhouse from the butcher last month and BBQ's it myself and believe me it blew this particular cut (and it didn't take a half an hour...lol)
Between the ten of us we had ordered several different dishes. The braised short ribs I was told was delicious. The Ribeye was way too fatty. The filet was good. The strip steak was disappointing. A friend ordered the American Wagyu Skirt and the portion was so small that were were joking that he had ordered it from the kids menu.
The sides for the most part were also very disappointing. First the good: French fries and mushrooms. The bad: Jalapeno mash (there was no flavor of Jalapeno whatsoever), if it wasn't green in color you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The worst part are the portions. I took 2 tablespoons of the mash and it seemed there wasn't even another full tablespoon left. We ordered 6 sides and they didn't even last 5 minutes into dinner.
Lastly, although the staff was very polite nobody came to ask us how dinner was, or whether the steaks were cooked to our liking. It's nice to be asked and in my experience most places do.
As we were all pretty disappointed we asked for the check without ordering any coffee or desserts so I can't comment about that.
The meal wasn't terrible, but with so many better options in the city why even bother with a below average steakhouse. Off the top of my head in no particular order you would be better off at Wolfgang's, Uncle Jacks, Benjamin's, Ben and Jack's, Del Frisco's, Rothman's, Maloney and Porcelli, Angelo Maxie's, Sparks, Keens....I can go on and on.
New York's BEST steakhouse.
BLT Steak is one of the best steakhouses i have ever been to. The best thing on the menu is their mashed potatoes. Their Rib Eye is also fantastic. Don't get the Filet Mignon, it is never cooked well and never tastes very good.
If you are a steak lover, BLT Steak is where you should head to.
If the attitude didn't overpower the food....
This place is a nightmare. From the manager on down, the attitude is such a turnoff that it makes it difficult to taste the food. Don't dare try to enter before 5pm for a Friday after-work cocktail...even if you have spent thousands of dollars there, they will look at you like you have aliens crawling from your ears. If you go, just be sure to avoid the spikey-haired skinny manager at all costs. He looks like he should be a counselor at a day camp, and he would probably be much better suited in that role.
Oh yes, and the steak isn't anything to write home about. Anyone notice the LA Times article that Laurent Tourondel has cut off his affiliation with the place? Even he couldn't stand it. I guess they should start thinking of changing their name to BS Steak.
Everything was absoltely perfect.. I went to BLT Steak with my boyfriend on Valentine's Day. We had a reservation but arrived around 40 minutes early. We were seated right away despite the time difference. Almost immediately after receiving our menus, we were presented with a complimentary "on-the-house" appetizer of crostini with a homemade port wine spread. It was delicious. Before even ordering we were also served these huge parmesean popovers bigger than one's fist. As well as the port wine spread it was equally delicious. We finally placed our order and started off with the baby spinach, maytag and bacon vinigarette salad. It was flavorful with a very light not overpowering dressing and a great way to start things off. We then received our gorgeous looking steak, cooked medium (their medium is like a normal medium-rare, which i am a fan of). If it served with a sprig of rosemary and a few cuts of garlic herb butter. The crust on the steak was both crispy and delicious and the steak was very tender especially for a normal porterhouse. They have numerous sauces to go along side but we chose their signature steak sauce and a peppercorn sauce which were both good. Our sides were hash browns and creamy spinach. It was hands downthe best creamy spinach I have ever had being that they use the full leaf spinach, it was not overly creamed or liquidy. The hash browns had a nice crispy outside and soft riced-potato inside and is served in almost a potato pancake form. We were so full after dinner we had no room for dessert but with how courteous this place is, they still gave us two small chocolate tarts about the size of a silver dollar. They were small but packed with rich, chocolate flavor. We were very impressed with every element of the meal and it is easy to say I have a new favorite steakhouse. It was a meal that I bragged about to family and friends and there is no doubt in my mind I will be paying BLT Steak another visit as well as visiting their other chains throughout NYC.
HOT COFFEE. We were seven people in our party! The service was so bad, the table was the worst, the food was ok nothing great and to top off the night they spilled coffee down my 22 year old daughters back. Not an enjoyable evening. With so many great places in New York - try someplace else!
Overated and overpriced..
It was a good steak, dont get me wrong. Its really hard to "butcher" a good piece of meat so most anyone can do an average job. However, when you've experienced Peter Luger or even the Strip House, I'm sorry to say everything pales in comparison. The sides are very small. I'm not a bread person but they have these enourmous popovers for the table that my party enjoyed. Overall, I dont think its worth the price but for many single women, the place was crawling with martini drinking carnivores of the male type.
Joyce De Witt seems to like it, she was there with friends, she was lovely in person.
Perfect Dinner Spot. Loved the steak, wine list, and service was great- expensive, but it's worth it for a special night out- I will be back.
My husband and I had a spectacular meal here. The service was great. The food amazing and the atmosphere fun and relaxing. We'll be back.
Disappointed. I was extremely disappointed with the food here. I am a huge fan of kobe beef, so naturally this is what I ordered. It was not tasty at all. It tasted like nothing more than a fatty piece of plain old steak. For that price, I expect a delicious piece of meat.
