What People Are Saying About Kano Yama

In Short – Founded by staff of the late, lamented Iso, which long occupied the same prime corner location, Kanoyama continues its predecessor's legacy of popular, stylish sushi. Rose-hued track lighting overhead casts a pleasing glow on the small, spare room. In addition to a large and distinctive assortment of daily sushi and sashimi, a la carte or in combinations, the kitchen offers dishes like sake-marinated black cod, sliced duck with scallions, and "sea foie gras" made with monkfish liver.

ambiance
100.0% positive
  1. The ambience is great but the food is just average.
food quality
77.5% positive
  1. Stds like Miso soup and Hijiki salad were very good.
  2. Best plan is to order more appetizers and get one sushi platter.
  3. went across the street and had a reasonable sushi meal.
  4. The fish is of very good quality, and very well presented.
  5. all the fish was extremely fresh, perfectly cut, and presentation was great.
  6. LONG wait for terrible food.
  7. The ambience is great but the food is just average.
  8. The shrimp shumai were good and the Omakase sashimi platter was a treat to see as well as taste!
  9. In fact, overall one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to (better than Bond St, Tomoe).
  10. Tranquil setting - very good sushi
  11. the sashimi was very fresh and tasty, but there wasnt much of it.
  12. The food is expensive, but quality over quantity!
  13. The 10-dollar per piece special Uni was good, though not excellent (i.e. not worth the price), while the best item in my meal was the Zucchini Tempora with shrimp and uni, 2 large pieces, 17$.
  14. Outstanding quality sushi for very reasonable prices.
  15. love sushi, and have eaten at some of the best sushi places both in NY and in Japan.
  16. Granted, the last time they actually gave me a decent seat, the fish was very fresh, but it's not Sushi of Gari.
  17. my main dish, the salmon, was dry and overcooked.
  18. Was really surprised with the negative reviews, this my joint favourite sushi spot in the city, excellent black cod, super fresh sashimi and excellent specials, best I've had their was a blue fin tuna rib special one of the most unusual and fantastic dish
  19. recommend the blue fin tuna steak, which was a large raw tuna steak that we scooped the flesh out of (= 30 pieces medium sashimi) and the exotic striped bass with a cold water wash and sauce (Sui Gyoza?)
  20. you still have to wait too long but now is for mediocre sushi so might as well go to some other of the 100000000000 Sushi places in the area.

Fantastic fixed price menu

by risiebisi

Kanoyama's fixed price early dinner special is such a deal. Been there on a number of occasions and always pleased. Great design on the additional new space.

Was really surprised with the negative reviews, this my joint favourite sushi spot in the city, excellent black cod, super fresh sashimi and excellent specials, best I've had their was a blue fin tuna rib special one of the most unusual and fantastic dish I've tried, service is decent but the quality of food and reccomendations negate that and the occasional wait....

It just goes to show how unreliable Zagat ratings are

by pianotu

I totally agree with the previous reviewer that Kanoyama should be around 20 in Zagat, not 27. We had the sushi for 2 for 44$, which were among the most ordinary pieces I've eaten in the city (uninteresting selection and so-so quality of fish, and the rice was too tightly shaped for my taste).

The 10-dollar per piece special Uni was good, though not excellent (i.e. not worth the price), while the best item in my meal was the Zucchini Tempora with shrimp and uni, 2 large pieces, 17$. It came with 3 kinds of seasoned salt (citrus, green tea, curry).

Good neighborhood Japanese I guess, and the service and vibe was nice and unhurried during early Saturday evening. But will I go again? Not likely.

  • Pros: Daily specials, good ambience.
  • Cons: Disappointing sushi.
