What Our Expert Scouts Say

March 13, 2013

If there's a better bar in the East Village in which to drink stout and catch your breath, I wish someone would tell me what it is. One of the most un-St. Patrick-y Irish bars you'll ever visit.

Worst Bar on Bowery. I found this bar to be unwelcoming and overpriced. I've never had a ruder bartender and this was shocking considering there was NO ONE else in the bar, on a Friday night....no wonder. I wouldn't recommend this bar to anyone.

Great alternate sports bar. Excellent location right on bowery/houston, always able to get in & probably get a table, food is surprisingly good

One of my Faves. I've been going to Slainte since 2004. Put it this way, the night I asked my wife to marry me, we came here afterwards, and I asked her again. It's that type of place, you feel like family here. One of the things that attracted me initially to this place was that it wasn't that crowded after work. But like all good places, word gets around, and more and more people started showing up, which is good for the owners, I'm sure. There's a great selection of English and Irish brews on hand, as well as all the American favorites. The bar food is excellent. The Shepard's Pie and Bangers & Mash are some of the best I've had this side of the pond. The bar and waitstaff are extremely attentive, no matter how crowded it gets. There's plenty of TVs to catch whatever sports action is going on, and a large projector on the back wall. If you happen to be in New York during the week, stop by, I'm probably sitting in the back with my computer open, enjoying a brew and some good food.

Amazing service. I just went to Slainte last Tuesday night for the first time. Normally I dont go out on tuesday nights (I save my drinking for the weekends) but I had a particularly rough day at the office so I decided to have a beer after work. My experience at slainte was so amazing due to the great waitress, bartender, music and overall atmosphere that I totally forgot about the rough day I was having. I am absolutely going to become a regular slainte goer!!!!! Very highly recommended.

Awful experience. Like others, I found the wait staff was rude, mean, and tried to cheat my friends, and almost ruined a going-away gathering. Like other reviewers who had bad experiences, I've since heard a lot of similar stories about Slainte after this happened - what a terrible bar, there are way better places to spend your money.

Exemplary pub food, great open space, and generous bartenders. There is no dearth of Irish pubs in the area bounded by 14th street but Slainte is right up there with Puck Fair, McSorley's and the Baggot Inn.

The food is great. With special touches like fresh bread from the nearby Parisi bakery on Elizabeth street, the menu is significantly more expansive than your average bar food palette. Among the highlights are the macadamia chicken salad (the avocado and mango lend a mellow touch), the buffalo wings (never skimpy like at Off the Wagon type places), and of course the burger. The meat is seasoned lightly enough to notice an extra kick, and the fries have a unique taste (they may be fried in peanut oil...I need to check on this).

The kitchen closes at midnight, but that's plenty of time to take advantage of monday night football deals. On that topic, there are six tvs and a projection screen for the main event.

The bartenders are friendly, and as the addage goes, a well-tipped bartender will open his heart and his bottles and go that extra mile for you and your large party that ordered 19 lemon drops. The booze is reasonably priced for Manhattan.

Personal disclosure: I've celebrated my birthday here for the past 4 years running, since the space accommodates large groups without feeling cramped. The only time I've ever felt like it was TOO crowded was New Year's Eve.

great time. I held a birthday party here after it was recommended by a friend and the experience was perfect. I had a very hard time finding a bar in Manhattan that would reserve an area of tables without making you buy food, bottle service, or a private room. Slainte was able to do it with no problem. When we arrived the tables were reserved for us as promised and they had a waitress waiting. It's a great place for a party if you are looking for a middle ground between a dive and a nicer bar. They were so accommodating and didn't make you shell out a lot of money in order to have a good time. Will definitely go back.

good food and beer. Its a great place to get some good food, with a good selection of tv screens to watch any sports.Staff are very nice and are open to answer any questions. Definately one of the better irish bars that offers good beers and food, also crowd is nice especially at weekends considering its in manhattan.

Good drink, food and chat.. This is one of my favourite places to go for a relaxing few drinks with friends. They have an amazing selection of beers, the food is tasty and the staff are really friendly, helpful and good fun? particularly those hot Irish barmen! My friends and I have celebrated lots of birthdays here and I would definitely recommend it for parties and after-work drinks.

Friendly place with great Guinness and best Irish Breakfasts in town. Fun place where bartenders and wait staff enjoy having a laugh and creating the right atmosphere for socializing. Consistently great Guinness (no means guaranteed in other "Irish" bars in the city). The Irish Breakfast has sausages to die for
