What People Are Saying About The Den

In Short – Stylish Harlem denizens descend upon this retro-chic juke joint for R&B DJs and live jazz. There's a dusty down-home charm buried in its exposed brick walls, hardwood floors and old-fashioned booths, and a series of splashy, multihued paintings impart color and freshness. The cocktail and dining menus lend even more fun-loving character, with cutely named items like the honey-rimmed Lick Ya Lips cocktail and the Not Yo Mama's chicken and waffles, served with homemade strawberry-butter and maple syrup.
OMG- Somebody say 'Hole in Da Wall'!!!

Warning: If you think this is an actual lounge, you would be sorely mistaken. Yes, they play cute music, They have, wait let me count: 15-20 bottles of liquor, Nothing on Draft (ha ha), and if you are brave, I mean really brave-you will attempt to order and consume 'chicken and waffles' their most elite dish besides something as ridiculous as 'Soul food sushi', Wow, I didn't know someone could actually pull this off, with about 100 dollar investment and a couple repetitive DJ CD's. Anyway, I would love to continue this horrible and yes, very gracious review but my sweet potatoe fries just arrived and no-they look nothing like the beautiful, thin, flaky, batch of fries I know and love. These are straight Horse Fed Fries, made big for someone with Giant Horse teeth, they look like a cut up apple? WTH
WE LOVE THE DEN!

Me and my Fiance love the Den, the food, the atmosphere, music and neighborhood. The Den's food is delicious. I think we almost had everything on the menu so far. My favorite drink at the Den is the Den Dada, and my fiance's is The Harlem iced tea/Get drunk or die tryin' (it varies). Great place for couples very intimate atmosphere. We celebrated Valentines Day here and We had a great time.
- Pros: food, atmosphere, music
- Cons: more space for dancing
The good, the bad and the ugly

I don't know why I keep going back here, I guess I go every once in a while to remind myself of why I stopped going. While the food and drinks are good, and they do have a good happy hour, the service is horrible, but the last time really did it for me. I called one Friday to make sure there was no cover, they said no cover until either 9 or 10 (don't remember exactly), so the following week I went, got there at 7, and sure enough, the guy at the door was charging $5 to get in. As I stood there waiting for my turn and ready to ask for a manager, the guy at the door was rudely arguing with the man he was helping, telling him he was going to have to wait until he got change....of course. I told the ladies in front of me that I called and they said there was no cover, so they paid and went in and told someone what was going on. As he tried to charge me $5, one of the bartenders came out to him and said "you're charging people?" This guy was clearly trying to get his hustle on at the customers expense when he was only supposed to be checking id's. I stormed in and immediately told my friend to go get his money back. He later came in and caused a ruckus with the bartender, dropping a bunch of money on the floor.
Then, after waiting quite some time for someone to take our order, I finally went up to the bar and asked, "do we order up here or will the server come to the table?" His response was "I guess so" He then said, if I have time to bring it I will. He wasn't mean about it or anything, but still. I could understand if this happened this one time, but they are consistently understaffed. It's Friday night, hire another server! The music is also too loud (before it becomes a "lounge" after 10) and you have to scream at the people you're eating with.
This is one of the many bad service incidents I've had at the Den. Like I said, food and drinks are pretty decent, so if you don't mind BAD service, go ahead...otherwise, stay away!
- Pros: good food & drinks, good happy hour
- Cons: horrible service
