Great Little Spot. My hubby and I went there for a much-needed "date night" on a Wednesday evening. Attentive service, excellent, no-frills food. Could've used some music to drown out the bar noise-- weird to be in a restaurant without any music-- but otherwise it was great. Try the cheesecake-- it's insanely good!
Simply One of the *BEST*..
ScoopNYC's review is WRONG!!!
I can't imagine that the experience you described occurred at Trattoria Toscana... perhaps, your tastes and influences of the art of Northern Italian Cuisines are misconstrued. Fortunately, I will set the record straight.
For those of us who have been long time patrons of Trattoria Toscana , and followed the career path of the owner and executive chef, Franco Fazzuoli, know he had advid, notable followers of his Nona's bolognese such as James Beard and Alfredo Viazzi. So, take note that your bolognese sauce will absolutely be of the highest caliber--- it never disappoints!
Veal Chop with Porcini Mushrooms and Sage, Bistica a la Fiorentina, Parpadella with Rabbit Ragu, Duck Ravioli, and Lobster Risotto... are just a FEW examples of the dishes that are prepared to PERFECTION!
Conversely, the service has always been delightfully charming, gracious and never anything less.
The dishes are so seductive, so tantalizing, so mesmerizing--- much like a magic spell. So, if you've ever truly dined at Trattoria Toscana, you would never forget about it. In fact, you would dream about it. ;)
Good food -- not extraordinary food -- at fair prices.
Don't be fooled by all the five star reviews. This is not one of the great Italian places in the city. It's a pleasant local joint that serves tasty but forgettable food.
Examples? The Bolognese sauce is the ground beef with tomato sauce and pepper -- the sauce you always get at restaurants that can't be bothered to stew the meat and tomatoes for hours and hours until they combine into something that is neither liquid nor solid. The ground beef Bolognese sauce here is fine, but proper Bolognese sauce is transcendent. And if you doubt the gulf is as large as I say, go to Babbo and try their Bolognese sauce.
But that's not all. I asked for a veal chop medium rare and it came medium well. It's an easy mistake. Veal is hard to cook. The difference between medium rare and medium well is about 90 seconds, but it's a mistake that rarely happens at truly top places.
The service is also a bit slow.
All this is not to say you shouldn't give TT a try. It's just to say this place is not some magical spot.
Local escape from reality--- mini vacay!. CARAMEL PASTA! It's the chef's special,"Caramel Ripene: Homemade candy shaped pasta that is stuffed with proscuitto veal and chicken. This dish is served with a light cream sauce and vegetables." Oh,boy! It's genius! Not only is the food perfection, but the service just takes all your cares away. From the time we walked in to the time we left, we were treated better than family! Bravo Trattoria Toscana!
Bravo Trattoria Toscana. This is the place for pasta plus! Each pasta dish is prepared with the finest ingredients and served perfectly! The ambiance, the staff and of course, Franco make this a perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or just to treat yourself to a wonderful authentic Italian meal. It's always a treat for us to eat at Trattoria Toscana. Whether we choose a special pasta or any of the other memorable secondi piatti e.g. Osso Bucco, Veal Chop, etc. we are never disappointed.
Great food and service. I recently went with my friends to Trattoria Toscana for my birthday. I had been there several times before. As usual , both the food and service were excellent. The pasta was excellent. I would also recommend the cold antipasta mista and the cheese cake for dessert. In addition, the wine has never been disappointing. Recently, Trattoria Toscana received a "27" food rating from Zagat. Well deserved. Bravo Franco.
please go. This restaurant is the best of what Greenwich Village has to offer. The owner has spent a lifetime building the finest italian restaurants: Zinno, Ponte Veccio, Cent Anni. Now we are lucky to have him back with Trattoria Toscana. You are treated as the special guests in his house and the food is restorative and delicious. I just went for my birthday and will go back as often as I possibly can.
Perfect Meal. I was introduced to Trattoria Toscana by a dear friend when a long-time favorite restaurant had closed. Oh my goodness, we have to find a new one . . . well, this became the one! What delicious food for everyone and portions that are just right Depending on where you sit, the atmosphere is intimate to also being appropriate for groups and in the warm weather, sitting next to the large open windows and looking out is perfect. There is also a solo guitarist who plays on a weekly basis during the summer just outside of the restaurant so it creates a nice background, yet is unobtrusive. The staff is very warm and witty, never sacrificing professionalism. It is difficult to recommend a particular dish because they are each so specific and tasty but I am definitely looking forward to our next meal there. Close to various subway lines is also key. It's like coming home!
Greenwhich Village's Finest!. I have lived in Greenwich Village most of my life. And Trattoria Toscana has fast become the neighborhood's culinary crown jewel! The dishes are authentically Italian and uniquely prepared. The ingredients are always fresh. The service is personable and friendly. You never feel rushed. The wine list is superb. And both the everyday menu and daily specials are varied enough to accommodate most any budget. If you had to dine at only one restaurant in downtown Manhattan, this would be the one to choose.
Wonderful way to spend an evening!.
We were there last night (April 16 '09), a party of 12. I had made a reservation beforehand and they had everything ready. We were promptly seated and offered drinks, antipasti.
The waiting staff were courteous and very helpful.
The best part was that despite being a huge group, we were able to talk all through the evening and didn't feel rushed at any point.
They even allowed us to bring a cake from outside to celebrate our friend's birthday and brought it out with a candle and everyone in the restaurant wished our friend!
I loved everything about this quaint place, it was charming, romantic and a fun place to go for dinner- I am definitely going back!
