What People Are Saying About Bobby Van's Steakhouse

In Short – The suited-up inventors of the power meal are drawn in to this expense account heaven for steers with their peers. Lively business conversation booms throughout the elegant, wood-toned room as patrons consider simple offerings like shrimp scampi, lobster by the pound, crab cakes, lamb or veal chops, but they then order the giant porterhouse (the traditional favorite) anyway. The spacious bar is especially convenient for after-work, or after-dinner, cocktails.

That Was Then This is Now

A friend asked about BVs and we looked at the reviews and I see there are reviews on Yelp for the other locations but this one hasn't been reviewed since May, 2011 so I thought I should represent - I've going there for over a year and everytime the service has been excellent, no attitude from very friendly staff. I've shared the porterhouse, had the burgers, salads, the veggies, (love the fries & onion rings, broccoli rabe), the desserts are fine, it's too bad the negative reviews are one shot bad experiences - of course if you're going to spend so much money on a dinner, you want to come out feeling like you got your money's worth and not like you paid top steak dollar for Outback Steakhouse. I used to like the Palm & Palm Too but this place is more intimate and sexier. My only piece of negative feedback is you can never really tell if they're open because it's a little recessed from the sidewalk and dark on the outside and you have to step down a couple of steps - but i guess it makes me feel like I know a little secret place....
Terrible Food, Steak was Aweful
by TRo
First time there and I was completely disappointed. The tuna tartar was disgusting. Normally, especially for that excessive price, it'll come out as one solid piece of tuna, slightly seared on the edges. This one looked like they chopped pieces of raw tuna and crammed it into a tuna can, flipped it over and covered it with mint sauce. Yuck!! OK, strike one, figured I still had my steak to come out. It got worse. My dish came out and my "medium" prepared steak looked like a leather shoe, and most certainly, tasted like one. I mentioned something to the waiter, and he said that's ok, just cut it in the middle and forget the edges. What? It was dry and had no flavor. When you spend this much money on a steak at a famous steakhouse, it is a crime to need to request A1 steaksauce or ketchup, just to give it flavor. I should have realized what I was getting myself into when my coworkers, who had come there before, indicated the best meal at the famous steakhouse is the fish. Go figure. I will never go there again, and, I recommend no one else does either. Why throw your good money away when there are so many better options in NYC?
Not the best but pretty good

There are better steak houses in the city, but this is one of the better ones. Atmosphere is not particularly special. Service is good. Steaks came the way we ordered them.
Judgemental Service
by malakachin
The sevice was so judgemental when ordering from restaurant week's prefix menu. Comment to Bobby Van's - you CHOSE to participate! If you're going to let ordering from the prefix menu influence the service, then don't sign up for restaurant week! I've been here many times for a $2K+ expensed lunch (don't we all miss those days!) I decided to go for the $35 prefix (if I wanted to pay full price for a steakhouse, I'd choose Wolfgang's in a heartbeat!) Snub me & charge me $1 more/glass than listed on your wine menu. Sorry that you need it! Thank God Wolfgang's opened up close by (200 East 54th Street/Third Avenue), I know where to take my next expensed lunch!
Great steak

After reading the reviews I was a bit hesitant to go to Bobby Van's but I was in the mood for a good steak so I decided to give it a try. I went in on a Sunday night without a reservation but the hostess was very nice and accommodating. The decor is typical steak house- very cozy and warm. I agree with many of the posts here which state that the service is so-so. After taking my order, I never saw my waiter again. Although I don't like when the wait staff come around TOO much, I do expect them to stop by once to see if everything is ok, if anything else is needed/wanted or if a refill of drinks is requested. I ordered the petit filet mignon which was great but the price was hefty. As a relatively frequent NY diner, I know the prices in the city are higher than elsewhere but for the prices they charge, there should be a potato or vegetable to accompany the steak (as there is with other entrees). All the sides are for 2, so as a lone diner, this was a bit of a waste for me. They should offer single sides for those dining alone or for anyone who doesn't want to share a side with someone. When I was done with dinner, someone else brought me my check- again my waiter was MIA, although on the way out I saw him and said goodnight and he didn't respond. Would I go to Bobby Van's again? Perhaps, because the food was very good but there are other good steak houses that don't charge as much. And the staff should be more attentive, although maybe the other waiters there are nicer (I can only speak for mine).
