Excellent class! I'm hooked! – This was an excellent pilates mat class. I have been all over the city trying to find a class like this one, little did I know it's in my back yard! The beginner mat class was focused, and taught by an experienced instructor who knows the way the body works. This is very important to me as a massage therapist. I will definitely be back. You should go too.
Note that all of the positive reviews are old...... – I wanted to try 6th St because I live close by. Maybe in the past this place was good or else I had a horrible new teacher. But, the owners should have some standards or check on their teachers.
I'm definitely not an expert or certified. I took pilates for a couple years before moving to East Village. But, I know enough that the teacher probably shouldn't **sit on a stool at the front of the class and drink her coffee** while teaching the class. This was the Saturday afternoon class and it was packed with 18 people. She never moved, called out positions, and "up/down" or "ok, now we're going to do a lower abs thingey". (I'm serious, these are direct quotes and I swear she was sitting on a stool drinking coffee)
I love pilates because it's intricate and small changes can make a huge difference. For example, position of the foot such as pointed toes or flexed foot is very important for certain exercises. A good teacher points out the subtleties and makes sure her students are precise.
The teacher I had at 6th St sat on a stool the entire class and didn't correct anything, let alone walk around and correct individual students. Like I said, I am no expert, but some students were doing the opposite of the rest of the class. And, sometimes, people were going things that could have caused injury.
If you know what you're doing already, this place might be fine for someone to call out a series to you. But, I would suggest trying someplace else......
Knowledgeable Instructors – I am a practicing physical therapist and finding a legit pilates studio with instructors who were educated on the mechanics of the human body like I am was important to me. I have been to many other pilate studios, but nothing compared to 6th street pilates. I am very impressed!
The best Pilates ever! – Whenever I go to 6th Street Pilates, I leave feeling and knowing I've gotten a great workout, but I am not sore, or feel that any of the trainers have not given me personal attention. The training is all about what works for me and with such small class sizes (8 at the most), you don't feel like you are in a room full of trainers who just want to get you in and out and on to the next class. I've felt terrific every time I've left and miss it when I am not there.
I've been going to Katherine's mat classes for four years now and not only has my body changed but I still look forward to classes on a weekly basis. I'm addicted to Sixth Street Pilates! I also love the atmosphere and have made wonderful friends in class. Thanks Sixth Street!!
Highly Recommended – I have been a student at this comfortable, low-key East Village studio for several years. As a result, I have increased stability and strength, greater body awareness and mobility, decreased back pain and improved breathing habits. The studio’s instructors are knowledgeable and personable, and they have the skill of teaching with endless patience while pushing students to achieve their personal best. They have transformed this formerly reluctant exerciser into a devotee.
Before 6th Pilates, I had back pain. Now I don't! And I look better too... – I like to tease Jeremy, the owner of the studio, that he has performed a medical miracle with me and saved some insurance company hundreds of thousands of dollars. He laughs modestly, but it's no joke. I started coming to the studio close to four years ago. Back then my lower back would seize up in muscle spasms every few months, plane rides were awful, it even hurt to sneeze. I had been to an MD and knew I didn't have a disc problem, yet something was out of alignment. Acupuncture, visits to the chiropractor and Thai massages would help ease the pain momentarily, but the spasms and discomfort always returned. I have been working privately with Jeremy once or twice a week, more or less, for the last four years, and I have been pain free - 100% pain free - for at least nine months. I also feel so much better in my body. The private sessions are really useful if you are not very athletic or a dancer, because the teacher helps you understand your own body's mechanics in a way that only one-on-one instruction can provide. So whether you are looking to alleviate pain, or just feel better, treat yourself to the private sessions. Your body will thank you!
A gem – I have been going to Sixth Street Pilates regularly since 2004. I live on the upper east side where there are many exercise studios, so you can see how devoted I am to the place. I am most impressed with the quality of the instruction and the professionalism of the staff. The studio is immaculate and well run. The atmosphere is relaxed but serious. I love the pilates mat classes. If you don't mind splurging, try a private pilates session. It is very worthwhile.
Love it – Mat is great for me but I have been going to different classes depending on my schedule and all are really really efficient and dedicated. It is really worth the $15/class (and yes, it is really unexpensive...)
I suffer from the back a lot and these classes do an amazing job on me!
I'll add they lauched morning classes, which can be very convenient for some.
Go there and try it!
Personalized Attention, Professional Teachers, Great Studio – I have never stuck for any kind of exercise for more than a month, since I started going to sixth street pilates 4 months ago, I have notices that I have become addicted to it. I go to mat classes and private classes, and both are absolutely amazing. Even if you are in mat classes the attention is personalized, instructors get to know who you are and how your body works, they design exercise for your body specifically and guides you wherever you need help. They also talk to you about why your body works the way it does and how to improve on it. They have patience and they love pilates and how to teach. I am not planning to stop any time soon, and my life has changed since I began going to classes. Highly recommended for absolutely anybody!
