“I've been to enough of those intense power yoga and pilates classes at big gyms and snooty studios to know that I prefer the relaxed atmosphere of Sixth Street Pilates for my practice.”
“If you haven't tried pilates before, this is a great place to start, because the teachers really manage to work with everyone individually while still keeping the class moving,”
“It's a great neighborhood studio whose staff and students are friendly and respectful.”
“not only that the prices are sane, & they have classes in different hours, the teachers are the best teachers i came across in the city so far.”
“am a part time resident of NY from Los Angeles - and I have been looking for a good pilates studio for a long time.”View Less
Excellent class! I'm hooked!. This was an excellent pilates mat class. I have been all over the city trying to find a class like this one, little did I know it's in my back yard! The beginner mat class was focused, and taught by an experienced instructor who knows the way the body works. This is very important to me as a massage therapist. I will definitely be back. You should go too.…
Note that all of the positive reviews are old.......
I wanted to try 6th St because I live close by. Maybe in the past this place was good or else I had a horrible new teacher. But, the owners should have some standards or check on their teachers.
I'm definitely not an expert or certified. I took pilates for a couple years before moving to East Village. But, I know enough that the teacher probably shouldn't **sit on a stool at the front of the class and drink her coffee** while teaching the class. This was the Saturday afternoon class and it was packed with 18 people. She never moved, called out positions, and "up/down" or "ok, now we're going to do a lower abs thingey". (I'm serious, these are direct quotes and I swear she was sitting on a stool drinking coffee)
I love pilates because it's intricate and small changes can make a huge difference. For example, position of the foot such as pointed toes or flexed foot is very important for certain exercises. A good teacher points out the subtleties and makes sure her students are precise.
The teacher I had at 6th St sat on a stool the entire class and didn't correct anything, let alone walk around and correct individual students. Like I said, I am no expert, but some students were doing the opposite of the rest of the class. And, sometimes, people were going things that could have caused injury.
If you know what you're doing already, this place might be fine for someone to call out a series to you. But, I would suggest trying someplace else......…
Knowledgeable Instructors. I am a practicing physical therapist and finding a legit pilates studio with instructors who were educated on the mechanics of the human body like I am was important to me. I have been to many other pilate studios, but nothing compared to 6th street pilates. I am very impressed!…
The best Pilates ever!. Whenever I go to 6th Street Pilates, I leave feeling and knowing I've gotten a great workout, but I am not sore, or feel that any of the trainers have not given me personal attention. The training is all about what works for me and with such small class sizes (8 at the most), you don't feel like you are in a room full of trainers who just want to get you in and out and on to the next class. I've felt terrific every time I've left and miss it when I am not there.…
I'm addicted to Sixth Street Pilates. I've been going to Katherine's mat classes for four years now and not only has my body changed but I still look forward to classes on a weekly basis. I'm addicted to Sixth Street Pilates! I also love the atmosphere and have made wonderful friends in class. Thanks Sixth Street!!…
