TOP TEN CITYSEARCH BEST SMALL PLATES AND OUTDOOR DINING

  • 20 Tapas under $10
  • Signature Sangrias, Martinis
  • Tapa Tuesday Wine Wednesday

While large plate entrees are offered-paella is a popular choice at The Courtyard, the tapas experience means there is more to explore through sharing. Bacon-wrapped stuffed dates are a staple but the caramelized little beauties are served with a thick, Cabrales-Spanish blue cheese dip, creating a sweet and savory treat that sings along with a sip of Roija. Offering an informed and passionate selection of Spanish tapeo punctuated by daring wines, the duo has created an uncomplicated introduction for the tapas beginner and a formidable experience for those in search of the real deal, the attention to culinary detail may be serious, but the atmosphere, perfect for an intimate date or a large birthday party, is still friendly and casual.

Editorial Review for The Courtyard – by Randi Schmelzer

In Short
Small tables and ladder-back chairs surround a trickling fountain on the cozy terrace of this Spanish-Mediterranean eatery, attracting couples and groups. Inside, dark-wood floors, exposed beams and brick walls set the mood. A contemporary tapas menu includes Basque garlic shrimp, stuffed peppers and select olives and meats. For entrees, there are steak frites and various paellas. Sangrias are available by the pitcher and the glass, with flavors like traditional citrus, peach and blueberry lemonade.

I tried this restaurant for the first time last year at the recommendation of a friend. I have since introduced many of my friends to it. The atmosphere is great, the food excellent, the staff friendly. My friends and I have tried many of the dishes on the menu. Some of our favorites include the dates in bacon, steak a lo pobre, paella valencia, piquillos, and risotto-balls. And don't forget the sangria! I'm partial to the blueberry lemonade sangria but the peach white wine sangria is also very good. Parking can be a little scarce but before you park a hike away from the restaurant, try the Collar and Leash parking lot (I was just there last night and they've put up more No Parking signs in there but look for a couple of unmarked spots and you're good to go). The restaurant can get busy and I'm not sure if they don't have enough waiters or what but I noticed that the last few times I've been there our waiter went MIA. We finished eating dinner around 10:15 and didn't see our waiter for a good half hour until I finally tracked him down for our check. Granted, waiting for the check is hardly obnoxious while enjoying the last glass of sangria but the fact that this wasn't the first time I experienced this kinda makes me wonder what's going on. MIA waiters aside, I highly recommend The Courtyard.

Pros: food, ambience, friendly staff

Cons: Parking can be tricky, MIA waiters

Ya, that's right... You get what you pay for! It's never been a more true statement than for The Courtyard restaurant. You get a great environment, fabulous service, and quality food. I've been here a few times traveling to Southern California, it's a great stop to make coming off the 101. The parking was a little chaotic, but I plan on coming back here again and again.

Pros: The tapas are to die for. I know that's cliche, but I would really die to eat these.. they are that good.

Cons: Nada. I really can't think of one reason why this place would have a down side. Perfect service, great quality food every time.
