The Scene
Mellow new age music and the instructor's calming voice are key signs that this isn't going to be a conventional high energy workout. But a pair of three pound weights near each mat indicates that this also isn't going to be an everyday yoga class. Triathlete Anthony Carillo's brainchild falls somewhere between body sculpting and hatha yoga; the regimen stresses a mind-muscle connection that weight-lifting can attain when incorporating Eastern approaches to breath and balance.
The Workout
Except for one sun salutation, the weights are a continual presence. Sometimes, they're used to increase the challenge of a pose like Warrior I; other times, they're incorporated as layered exercises like when bicep curls are executed during the Triangle. Indeed, even when hands are in prayer in front of the heart chakra (normally a time of rest), students are still holding hand-held weights. Relaxation is strictly after class.
