Editorial Review for Pure Food and Wine – by Allison Austin

The Scene
Energetic servers whip about the dining room, describing dishes--"the crust is made from dehydrated cashews; the noodles are made from squash"--to a curious and somewhat skeptical audience. Fuchsia high-backed chairs punch color into the dimly lit room. In seasonal weather, the outdoor patio, a gorgeous expanse surrounded by thriving herbs, captivates.

The Food
Because everything on the plate is organic, dairy- and meat-free, and--gasp--entirely raw, dining here can be distracting; it's difficult not to analyze each bite. What's surprising is that everything is delicious. Standout starters include lettuce wraps filled with mango, cabbage, ginger and cashews and an outstanding tamarind-chili sauce. Ambitious entree creations, like squash pasta in truffle sauce with shaved truffles and lasagna with a striking basil-pistachio pesto and ricotta made from pignola nuts, are worthy of a return visit. A blueberry tart with lemon verbena ice cream is a summery finish.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

The namesake Pure mojito ($13) is made with tons of fresh mint, lime and sake instead of rum. The wine list features many good options ($25-$45), including refreshing Adelsheim pinot blanc ($35) from Willamette Valley.

The Extras

Drop by Pure Juice and Takeaway for ice cream, fresh smoothies and juices, and selected menu items. The small takeout shop is around the corner on 17th Street, between Irving Place and Third Avenue.

Friends and I went to Last night for the first time. Its extremely pricey but worth it. When I first saw the food I didn't think I'd feel full but I felt completely fulfilled. I got the zuchini flowers and I was very impressed. We also split the mint ice cream for dessert and it was unbelievable. If you aren't into raw foods or organic healthy lifestyle you might not see it the same way. I will definitely be back!!!

Pros: artwork on a plate

Cons: price

I thought the food was outstanding. Yes, it was a bit pricey but I knew that beforehand, so I don't understand people complaining about the prices. We had our meal in the garden, what a beautiful setting. The wait staff was very attentive and helpful. We had the 5 course chef's choice and loved every dish that came out. Specifically, the thia wraps were fresh and the dipping sauce was wonderful. The ravioli wasn't like the real thing - it was better. The stuffed pepper and the taco were fabulous. The desserts (minted ice cream and lemon cheesecake) made me want seconds. I was afraid of leaving hungry but that didn't happen. We weren't stuffed (which is how I feel when eating the SAD) but pleasantly full, there was no stopping for pizza or something else later. The dining experince did take 2 hours, but hey, if I wanted a rushed meal then I would have gone elsewhere. When I visit NYC again, I'll definately eat at Pure Foods again. Go and enjoy!

Pros: Wonderful food, outstanding wait staff, garden dining, first rate place

Cons: It was pricey but it was worth it.
