Editorial Review for Kittichai – by Allison Austin

The Scene
Orchids abound. They're submerged in cylindrical glass vases in the small bar area; in the dining room, they climb up teak posts surrounding a bottom-lit pool. Jewel-toned raw-silk curtains and teak lattice, used to break up the boxy space, add further intrigue. Service in the dining room is well-tuned and well-versed in the nuances of the menu.

The Food
Chef Ian Chalermkittichai brings New York what it has long been missing: truly excellent Thai food. Flavors are sharp, bright and clearly defined; the chef's skill is particularly obvious in familiar dishes like Thai beef salad, which rings of lime and hot chili on the palate, and a perfectly calibrated, addictive green curry bearing incredibly tender short ribs. The sea bass, marinated in a sweet-salty bean paste, is Chalermkittichai's answer to Nobu's black cod, and it's equally stellar. The kaffir lime tart is a fitting denouement.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

Have a cockail; both the tart and limey Ginger Lemongrass Cooler and the Watermelon Cooler are immensely refreshing. The wine list offers a few options by the glass, and most bottles range from $35 to $60.

My husband took me here for a celebration dinner and it was fabulous. Tip for the top ladies, dress up as if your life depends upon it! The decor and design of the restaurant is beautiful and the service in the restaurant itself was pretty good (though they do that irritating clear your partners plate before you are both done, which drives me insane!). We started with drinks at the bar, the cucumber and kiwi cocktail was out of this world, the bar tender who served us had zero service skills, no please or thank you, kept us waiting for 10 minutes. Once past the retarded bar tender, the food was amazing, we had Tuna Tartare and carpaccio starter, the tuna was served in miniature pastry cups with almonds and a spicy sauce - sounds disgusting but it was amazing! For mains we had the Hake (very subtle flavor - almost too subtle) and the chicken which were both really good. This place is extremely glamorous and the clientele reflects this. If you really like your date, treat them to dinner here!

Pros: stunning decor and ambiance

Cons: lame bartender...skip pre dinner drinks
