The Scene
Why not call it Dumpling Woman, in recognition of the ladies who--behind glass--tirelessly shape, fill and pinch the delicate packages of pork, chicken, vegetables and seafood? Even weeknights are busy, with a steady stream of takeout traffic and a rotation of college kids and neighborhood folks at the two skinny bars. The flanking orange countertops add color to the tiny white space.
The Food
From the veggie juices added to the filling (ginger and scallion in the flavorful, tender pork) to the beet-juice colored wrappers, the dumplings simply taste better for you. The thin dough, in the north Asian style, works especially well on the veggie, stuffed with an airy mix of soft and smoked tofu, wheat protein, shiitake mushroom and bok choy. Go for steamed to best enjoy the tender skins; however, it's hard to resist dipping the slightly oily seared ones into a bath of Sriracha.

If you're in the area then go ahead and try out dumpling man. The quantity of dumplings was ok for the price but the quality certainly was not. You should visit mandoo bar instead for real dumplings.

We were also slapped with a 'wrapping fee' of close to 10% on a takeout order of $5.50. The cashier did NOT notify us of the 'wrapping' charge and was unintelligible when taking our oder. And the shrimp dumplings tasted anything but shrimp. Will not return again. Ever.

I like dumplings as much as the next guy but Dumpling Man has taken greed to a new level. Yesterday I was in ordering some dumplings and while they are overpriced as it is I was in the mood for dumplings. Sitting waiting for my order I looked at my receipt and I noticed something called a takeout cover which added 50 cents to my bill. When I inquired I was told that it was a fee charged for taking my food to go. This fee is not stated anywhere on any menu or sign inside but rather it is silently added to your bill. Why on earth should I pay a premium to get my food to go? The fact that they slip this in there is criminal. I thought it was tacky when they started charging $1.50 for dipping sauce but the takeout fee is criminal. Their dumplings are average and certainly nothing to write home about - they never have been. The only reason I went was b/c it was down the street. These people have some nerve.

Unless you stumbled in looking for an Italian fix, avoid the Marco Polo dumplings slathered in tomato sauce.
The Extras:
The mascot, an adorable smiley faced dumpling, adorns pins and T-shirts for sale.
What to Drink:
Try the red bean latte, a not-too-sweet finish of steamed milk and gooey beans. In the summer, the shaved ice is a treat.
