Editorial Review for Sweetwater Restaurant – by Karen Hudes
The Scene
Not much remains of the divey Sweetwater Tavern except for the name, the pressed-tin walls and elaborate tile floor--remnants from the '30s, when the space was a Polish diner. The owners of Carroll Gardens' Patois and Schnack transformed the joint into a comfortable bar and restaurant with burgundy diner booths and milky sconces, offering a late-night menu to please the block's post-concert crowd.
The Food
Chef Tom Kearney (Blue Hill, Jean-Georges) presides over the contemporary, pared-down menu. His smoked trout, paired with capers and horseradish vinaigrette over a crisp potato pancake, makes for an exciting opener. Among the entrees, Sweetwater schnitzel layers a juicy breaded pork chop with a fried egg and anchovies for a tart bite. Succulent grilled hangar steak comes with finely battered onion rings. Though the strawberry shortcake has too-salty biscuits, the chocolate terrine brings together firm and melted textures with elan.

Insider Tips
When to GoThe late-night menu features a burger with gruyere, a croque monsieur and a charcuterie plate. Among the brunch specialties are steak and eggs, and asparagus frittata.
What to DrinkThe short cocktail list includes a mojito, a stimulating Car Bomb with Guinness, Jameson and Bailey's, and a French martini that could use a splash more pineapple.

One of the only "neighborhood joints" left in Williamsburg where the food is always consistent and the staff remembers your name.
Pros: food, service, garden
Cons: cash or american express only

I've been a regular for years, and the food has changed, but stayed pretty consistent. of note are the fried calamari, meats are their strong point: burgers, hanger steak, pork tenderloin. brunches are pretty light. great outdoor garden. HOWEVER, service isn't their strong point. i'm getting pretty tired of the argentine "owner" and his manners. he should be running a club not a restaurant. my husband and i came in waiting to be seated, when a couple of tarts hobbled up. the argentine sat them first and completely ignored us. if you can stomach watching him flutter about chatting up young chicks, your girlfriend or wife and can stand his dismissive attitude toward other customers than Sweetwater would be the perfect place to bring your hot date. what has become of a neighborhood when regulars don't count anymore?
