Hearty and Comforting Fare

by spanky1225

A friend and I went there twice yesterday (both before and after going to the movies across the street). Pre-movie, we had delicious coffee; she had a corn muffin, and I had a decadent (and toothsome) fruit muffin.

Post-movie, we both had cups of one of their delicious and very warming soups - the Country Style. I didn't want the cup to end. I'm a soup person, especially in cold weather, and this did the trick! Then, we shared the very substantial platter that came with sauerkraut-laced kielbasy, potato dumplings and a delicious (if slightly salty) mushroom sauce. That certainly filled me up for the evening.

The service was good, if not ambitious, and the two waitresses we had during the course of the day were pleasant . The decor is 'neutral cafe', with clean, well-lit booths, and a welcoming, cozy atmosphere. The feel is like Hemingway's "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" It's a place to feel relaxed and at home while enjoying good and inexpensive hearty food. And the bill for two wasn't painful at all - $21 and change for the two of us. Places like these are good to know about. Not a "date place", but nice to hangout, observe, and eat hearty.

so pleasant, diner-sheikh

by louisglass

Ah! Little Poland. The name rings out clear as a bellpepper stufffed with a hearty meat concoction, which I hope is just beef (though I know deep down contains pork ((I don't eat pork)). I used to read, work, hangout here a lot. The french fries have always been my favorite, for years, since my first visit circa 2002. Crisp, oily, hearty. No holds barred. The perrogies are a favorite of mine, mixing in a set of potato and cheese, and always boiled though fried is an option. I love the goulash. I love the nova omelette. I love the service, nice older women who smile so bright with any attempt at a Polish phrase. And then every once in a while, a younger Polish server, and I'm not trying to be sexist, but what can I write? It all adds to the ambiance. Good Lord, I'm soooo lonely....but basically, this is a Polish-based diner with really hearty fair and fairly traditional food. I suppose its as Polish as Chinese food is Chinese?but it is delicious and the value is dynamite if you get a dinner and it comes with two vege sides. Man. Good times.

  • Pros: great food, value, service.
  • Cons: Its a diner. If you don't like charming diners this isn't for you.

Best Polish Food

by AnnaDavidson

My father was born in Poland and my grandmother lived with us for many years. I have not had food as good as Little Poland's since I was young. Little Poland's food may even be better.

Food , service and coffee was perfect. My husband is Irish and he can not stop talking about the great Polish food. He wants me to cook him something similar - but he will have to wait until our next trip to NYC.

  • Pros: Food, Coffee

A Taste of Poland in Downtown

by WestLondona

An unpretentious diner-style place on 2nd ave, Little Poland is my place of choice whenever I crave some good Polish food. Though the interior looks quite American, the waitresses are all Polish and the food definitely tastes authentic. Their pierogi are some of the best i've had in the city. And as a surprising bonus, their banana pancakes are a must-try, any time of the day!

  • Pros: delicious food, cheap compared to everything around it
  • Cons: ambience

Where I go when I wish I had a Polska mama

by foodieknowsbest

I like to say that I've tasted every Ethnic cuisine out there and I'm always in the mood for something different.

Little Poland is the place I go when I'm in the mood for a hearty, home-made style meal.

A place I go to when I wish I had a Polska mama to cook for me.

They serve the standard Polish dishes that you'd expect (and even burgers...go figure).

Everytime I've gone I've ordered something different and I always leave with a doggy bag (its even yummier reheated the next day!).

This place looks like a neighborhood diner so its not some sort of hip, be seen, date spot.

But who needs shnazzy lighting and pumping music when you've got a great meal and good conversation with an old friend or significant other?!

  • Pros: Great food! Left-overs!
  • Cons: None
