Editorial Review for Plunge – by Julie Mehta

The Scene
Even well-dressed locals can't skirt the slow Hotel Gansevoort go-ahead for entrance to this luxe rooftop lounge. The elevator--equipped with standardly chic, cartoon-showing screens--glides up to penthouse level and opens on a buzzing throng. Like any hotel bar, the crowd is motley: tough guys in T-shirts and gawking tourists mixed in with the stylish professionals and trendsetters.

The Draw
Quite simply, it's the absolutely stunning views of the Hudson and midtown that possess people to squeeze their way up to the bar for a pricey drink. But vistas like this don't come for free--and the endless crowd spills out of the glass-enclosed main area onto the hassocks of the narrow adjacent lounge. The best spots are found on the wraparound patio with its flowerboxes and fresh air. Weeknights offer a more reasonable scene when the panorama can truly be appreciated.

One ultra hetero hangout spot! The boys and I go out to play here weekly in the summer here. I go to the party at the Ono Garden just about every Sunday and we tend to use the bathroom in the Hotel Gans lobby when the Ono bathrooms get overcrowded. Never any problems. The staff is very gay-friendly as well which is why I also stay at the hotel quite often. The black dreadlocked bouncer even lets my friends and I up even when we're not dressed appropriately and when I'm not staying there. He just asks that we behave ourselves. The only things negative thing that I can remember was one, this sassy fat black girl giving the doorman some grief when he was checking IDs. She was verbally abusive to and very flippant with him but her friends were not. He took it all in stride when it happened approximately two weeks ago.Don't know if she was just queening out drunk or both but she caused a scene but was dismissed almost as soon as she caused it. Thank goodness he didn't let her in, she looked a hot mess and had a helluva mouth. Too bad for her friends though, they looked great! Once pass the discerning doorman, be careful when upstairs too. As the last negative thing were the waitresses who aren't very responsive unless you are dressed a certain way. We had to constantly get up and find who is attending to us. This can be quite annoying especially when you see these girls just hanging around doing nothing on these slow and easygoing nights. I refuse to go during the weekends. The crowd is just too aggressive. Give it a try because you'll love the great drinks and great people! It would be great if they played house music though!

Pros: Great workers, good people, good drinks, nice finger food, great views, very lax security

Cons: Dress code rules, nasty bathrooms, people making out almost having relations all over the place

i've been to gansevoort a handful of times, most recently last night. every time i've been there, we've had a great time overall - the views are spectacular, it's packed and bumping, gorgeous people who are generally friendly, and you can smoke at the outside area, but there are definitely downsides. drinks are pricey ($14 for a small vodka soda), so bottles are not a terrible option if you'll be drinking a lot. i have to agree w/ some of the previous reviews though about the staff. the bartenders are avg, and the guys at the door can be either good or terribly surly. last night we had no problems at all (2 guys, 2 girls), and i've gone in myself to meet friends w/o any trouble in the past. however, one time in december, even after we had bought a bottle, i went downstairs to pick up a female friend and they wouldn't let us back in (and it was ~20 degrees outside). after about 15 minutes the security finally got their sh*t together, and the rest of the night was fine. but seriously. i agree w/ the guy that said the crowd gets sketchier later at night. there were definitely some really aggressive dudes more or less molesting girls, but that's definitely not the norm. overall, though, highly recommend if you don't mind the usual meatpacking bs.

Pros: view, crowd, partially outside

Cons: pricey drinks
