“This can be quite annoying especially when you see these girls just hanging around doing nothing on these slow and easygoing nights.”
Amazing!. One ultra hetero hangout spot! The boys and I go out to play here weekly in the summer here. I go to the party at the Ono Garden just about every Sunday and we tend to use the bathroom in the Hotel Gans lobby when the Ono bathrooms get overcrowded. Never any problems. The staff is very gay-friendly as well which is why I also stay at the hotel quite often. The black dreadlocked bouncer even lets my friends and I up even when we're not dressed appropriately and when I'm not staying there. He just asks that we behave ourselves. The only things negative thing that I can remember was one, this sassy fat black girl giving the doorman some grief when he was checking IDs. She was verbally abusive to and very flippant with him but her friends were not. He took it all in stride when it happened approximately two weeks ago.Don't know if she was just queening out drunk or both but she caused a scene but was dismissed almost as soon as she caused it. Thank goodness he didn't let her in, she looked a hot mess and had a helluva mouth. Too bad for her friends though, they looked great! Once pass the discerning doorman, be careful when upstairs too. As the last negative thing were the waitresses who aren't very responsive unless you are dressed a certain way. We had to constantly get up and find who is attending to us. This can be quite annoying especially when you see these girls just hanging around doing nothing on these slow and easygoing nights. I refuse to go during the weekends. The crowd is just too aggressive. Give it a try because you'll love the great drinks and great people! It would be great if they played house music though!
packed, good looking ppl, but staff definitely sub-par. i've been to gansevoort a handful of times, most recently last night. every time i've been there, we've had a great time overall - the views are spectacular, it's packed and bumping, gorgeous people who are generally friendly, and you can smoke at the outside area, but there are definitely downsides. drinks are pricey ($14 for a small vodka soda), so bottles are not a terrible option if you'll be drinking a lot. i have to agree w/ some of the previous reviews though about the staff. the bartenders are avg, and the guys at the door can be either good or terribly surly. last night we had no problems at all (2 guys, 2 girls), and i've gone in myself to meet friends w/o any trouble in the past. however, one time in december, even after we had bought a bottle, i went downstairs to pick up a female friend and they wouldn't let us back in (and it was ~20 degrees outside). after about 15 minutes the security finally got their sh*t together, and the rest of the night was fine. but seriously. i agree w/ the guy that said the crowd gets sketchier later at night. there were definitely some really aggressive dudes more or less molesting girls, but that's definitely not the norm. overall, though, highly recommend if you don't mind the usual meatpacking bs.
Bad Customer Service with Security Personnel at Hotel Entrance. I've visited this bar/lounge before in the pass and decided to pass through again to finish off the remainder of celebrating my birthday. Upon arrival at the hotel's entrance was bouncer/security personnel checking id's, which is not at all a problem. My problem is the fact that this particular security personnel (big african-american guy with dreads) made it difficult for me to get in because he feels as though I have an attitude. The situation all started where he asked us for ID; we glady comply. The he asked us where we from or where we were coming from. I looked at him with a puzzled look on my face to try to figure out why is he asking us this question. I in turn asked him if we looked like out of towners with a smile on my face because we're just making a little convo and he said no, its just that he has been seeing many people of color go in the lounge tonight. I said oh ok, we've been here before and all. Then he goes on to say that I have an attitude and I asked where is he getting that I have an attitude. So we are going back and forth about attitude for like five minutes. For the five minutes I kept saying I have no attitude over and over and nothing more. Finally, he says the three friends I came with can go in and I can't. I told him I do not care and my friends and I walked away only to spend our money elsewhere. I hope this ahole is not at the door every night because the lounge will most certainly loose money if you they have this fool standing there worried about who has an attitude and who don't. What a looser! I don't think I ever will be making a stop to this decent little hang out spot if this idiot is going to be at the entrance. It looks like he has some issues of his own he needs to take care of before servicing customers. Bad service at the door, WATCH OUT!!! (Occurence Sun. 8/24/08)
Beautiful place. This place is nice if you are looking for a drama-free night. It is not difficult to get in at all. The drinks were super expensive (like all trendy places in the city) but the service was fast and friendly. My friend and I sat at a nice table on the patio and the views were incredible. The music was okay, mostly hip-hop and top 40s which isn't what I would listen to normally but it's fine at a bar. The only bad thing was that later on (towards 3am) the crowd started getting sketchier/uglier, so I would recommend leaving around then. Overall a fun night!
We went early.... We were there from 8:00-9:30 on a Friday and it was no effort to get in, get drinks, and get a nice spot with a view. Bartenders are good looking chicks who make great drinks and are very friendly. There were all kinds of people there, not just the beautiful ones (who I'm sure show up much much later in droves) and I was glad to see some diversity. The views are lovely and I have no complaint other than I wish the outdoor space were just a little larger. Patrons were well behaved and reasonably well dressed for the most part. I would recommend you try it at least once. Don't know what it's like later on, but I'm definitly not into lines and bouncers. The Gansevoort glows in the dark and is just a tad too cool for itself, but it's a good time nonetheless.
Cool rooftop, decent drinks, bring a girl to skip the line fuss. I barely waited in line Saturday night with my girlfriend and we got in right away. No cover. We managed to get a tiny table near the glass wall. Nice view of the river. Cool place to bring a chick or friends for a few post party drinks.
Lovely view, great rooftop views. I invited about 11 friends on a Thursday night. We got there early so there were no lines to cut. It was a Thursday spring night so it was very easy to get in, no long lines, I went 630pm to make sure we had seats. The views are incredible. We sat near the Empire state building side.It got chilly and we were able to find seating for 11 people inside ---no bottle service, talk about lucky!! Our waitress was attentive and came by everytime she saw someone new come in. It was Fleet weekend we got an even better view with these uniformed officers seated across from us, looking mighty fine. They weren't tipsy yet so only 3 of them attempted to talk to us but my, my weren't they mighty fine. We got pictures with them, lol, and saw other women do the same. The crowd is very upscale and beautiful, some look like monied European tourists others looked like party girls, most men were in blazers and were very well-dressed. Eventually, my friends left one by one and me and my one friend started dancing. The music wasn't that great. Two guys approached as and invited us to a happening club nearby where we skipped the line, but that's another story. Overall, beautiful people, beautiful view, beautiful place!! There were some older people that I wouldn't normally hang out with like men in their 40's and 50's hagning out with 20 something women, I think it takes away from the ambience and trendiness, I'd rather the crowd be in their 20's and 30's. I would definitely come here again. Maybe on a Saturday or Friday night. Cool place!!
Amazing Views, great service and you can smoke!. I have been coming here for years. Didn't even realize it was called Plunge. The views are hard to beat here although it does get a bit crowded on the weekends. Why pay a cover at a crappy club when you can get in for free here? Overall great service but the main bar gets packed. Best bet is getting a table. Get to know the waitresses and you will always have a table when you come in. Mostly a lounge but some people dance. Wonderful spot to bring out of towners or a date. Weekends are a little b&t but so is the whole hood.
great night, great views.. I wanted to impress my friends from out of town so I took them to the rooftop at The Hotel Gansevoort. They were floored! The views were spectacular. We got a seat right out front and watched the sun set. The food was minimal but pretty good. Our server Carly was awesome!!! Drinks are a little pricey but what else can you expect in the meat-packing district. The Hog Pit is across the street if you're worried about $$$. Overall I highly recommend this place.
Rude/disrespectful managers, fat/ugly waitresses, pleasant/friendly security...something is rtten in Denmark. Visiting this place on the weekend takes a lot of effort just getting through the line. I happen to know the guy who owns this operation. Surprisingly I was disrespected by a manager who would not tell me his name the last time I attended the bar. I WAS a frequent patron of the rooftop bar but that is over now. The only person who treated me like a human being was this hotel security guy. The rather large, black rastafarian guy with the deep voice and dreadlocks ponytail in the turban. If you like drinking watered down drinks from plastic cups while partying with B&T trash, this place is where it's at. NOT! This place has lost it's flair, just as G Spa lost it's flair.
