Editorial Review for Tia Pol – by Allison Austin

The Scene
Young couples on dates make up the vast majority of diners; that's a good thing, since the slim space is lined with two-tops and space at the bar is scarce. Servers rush about, weaving through waiting wine sippers to deliver pitchers of sangria. The atmosphere is fun, festive and friendly--it's an instant neighborhood hit.

The Food
The affordable tapas menu runs the gamut, from more traditional tapas like ham croquettes to intriguing inventions like the already infamous combo of chorizo and bittersweet chocolate, which is anything but frivolous once tasted. Snack on a bowl of fried chickpeas while you browse the menu, then move onto the tender lamb skewers, which arrive atop a slab of French bread, perfectly poised to catch the meat's sweet drippings. Specials shouldn't be overlooked, especially the braised veal cheeks sided with an herb puree and apple-fennel slaw. Forego dessert; instead, sip a Spanish sherry.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Reservations are only taken for parties of six or more (there's only one table that seats that many), and seats at the bar are reserved for dining. Parties of two have the best luck.

What to Drink

The red sangria is fruity and refreshing. Wines by the glass include a fruity, medium-bodied carchelo and a more full-bodied crianza. A handful of sherries are offered.

I am so glad Tia Pol is in my neighborhood. This is the best best best place to eat. I love the selection of tapas and wines. It's hard not to have a good time and meal here with friends! If I don't go here, it's because I know it's very crowded and it will be a long wait! I usually will go early like 5:30 or 6 to get a table and avoid the crowds. EVERYTHING is yummy here. I love sitting at the bar and eating-you get quicker service too!

Pros: great tapas, great wine, great service, cute restaurant

Cons: too small! crowds and long wait!

2 Star Rating: Below Average

I went to Tia Pol on a weekday evening. It was packed. The waitress said we would have to wait for 40 mins for a table but we were given one in 15 mins! The ambience was good - young after work crowd. It is an extremely small place and it's hard not to stop people from bumping into you. The tables are extremely uncomfortable with very high bar stools with no backrest so I kept getting off the stool to stretch my feet or else I would get cramps! The food was below average - very salty and greasy. I lived in Spain so I know what authentic tapas taste like. These were not close. The portions are miniscule and the wines and drinks are only average. I wouldn't bother with this place. It's overrated.

Pros: Service

Cons: Everything else. Pl read my review.
