What People Are Saying About Dove

The Scene – Greenwich Village sensibility meets 19th-century charm at this sub-sidewalk level watering hole. The decor is straight-up Victorian--complete with red brocade wallpaper, ornate gold moldings, frilly pillows and matching teacups filled with snack mix. Despite the lavish details, the drinks are served at dive-bar prices, drawing a mixed crowd of fresh-faced college kids, gray-haired ladies, dressed-down dudes and glammed-up gals. – – The Draw – The bar offers 10 draft beers--poured through a shiny gold tap system--and a well-chosen wine list. On the drink…
Editor's Tips
- Happy Hour:
- Every day until 8pm, specialty martinis, small carafes of wine, cosmos and margaritas are only $6 each.
- Where to Sit:
- If you can snag it, grab the window seat and catch a breeze all summer long.
- The Extras:
- Snack mix isn't doing the trick? Nosh on light, upscale bar fare like bread, cheese and olives.

The Dove (Heartbreaker): What Happened to My Favorite Bar?
by enew
Dove! Why are your breaking my heart?? This is (was) my favorite bar in New York since I moved here in 2006...easy atmosphere, nice staff, delicious cocktails, so great to slip into those Victorian plush couches by the fire or the huge open window (oh spring nights!) and melt away my troubles with a delicious french lavender, cherry tart, sparkling brandy cocktail...or a generous pour of wine...best cheese plate in the city (with olives, toasted almonds, buttered bread, etc.), if not in the world. LOVE. But what's going on lately??? New manager, alias Scrooge+Heartbreaker? 1) first they stopped serving the free snacks (ok, this was circa winter 2006, but, whatever, I liked them) 2) happy hour is now $7 instead of $6. Not cool. 3) No more wine, and more importantly, no more prosecco, on the happy hour menu 4) No more happy hour at all on Fridays. Summary: Sorry, Dove...my unconditional love can't afford you any more...I would have given you ten thousand stars, but, after 5 years of loyalty, you've forced me to go to a new bar this Friday, and this feels like breaking up. Two stars, one little tear, and my itunes breakup/moving on mix to you. East Village bar explorations here I come...
Great Staff, but there's a Din
by eat_club
I guess it's the acoustics... and the crowd. It looks like a quaint little place, hidden away underground on Thompson Street in the Village. But when you go it, it's so loud (not from music, but from every one shouting to be heard over everyone else shouting to be heard), that the quaintness dissolves in the cacophony.
The girls liked the place a lot. The staff was extra friendly and accommodating... allowing us to move around to better and better seats, until we finally ended up in the window! The waiters, manager, busboy, everyone was super attentive and just as friendly. I liked 'em a lot. The girls fell in love with them.
Our group seemed to have the only non-occidentals in the bar. Except for our server, the bar was so white I thought I was in West Virginia. Where did they come from? Who knew there were so many in New York City of all places?
The food was on the expensive side, with a small dish of Olives going for $6, and a dozen pieces of toast with various toppings, topping out at a whopping $30. It was good, especially the cheese mushroom, but not $30 good. The beer selection was okay, and normal priced at $6 for a tap beer. The food is what'll set you back. So make sure you've got some space on your credit card before you go in... and plenty of lung power to shout above the din. Oh yeah, bring your sunglasses, the whiteness of the crowd may be blinding. --Drink Club is a Roving Group of NYC Drinkers
- Pros: Super friendly waiter/manager/bus
- Cons: Very loud, expensive food
Sounds great

I haven't been to The Dove, but upon reading the negative reviews by the whining yuppies, I can't wait to go. I'll be in NY next week for a vacation from bartending in San Francisco. I always use cash, never credit cards (I'm no fool), and I plan to ask to be served by the bitchy redhead?sounds like my kind of gal! I pride myself on my high negative ratings on YELP.

Good Place Nasty Redhead Host
by Leigh519
Not a bad atmosphere, hasn't been completely taken over by the hip crowd. The tea sandwich sampler was fantastic and generally the staff was helpful and pleasant. Except, avoid the red head female. She is completely rude and for no reason. The rest of her equals were great. We asked for a plug to charge a phone, she gave us the brush off and said "ya we don't do that." Another worker saw this and said.."go ahead there's one over there." over the course of the evening and her rudely interjecting and actually giving dirty looks we found that the phone had been unplugged and tossed to the side. In making eye contact with her, we got that "ya I'm the b%#CH that did that for no reason." So go there, but tell the redhead to f-off.
- Pros: Intimate, Good Snacks
- Cons: Can be crowded, need reservations for seating usually, evil redhead
A bar with heart...
by tomtomnyc
I just found out what The Dove is doing for their new years party and it kinda blew my mind. Get this, on what is probably one of the most lucrative nights of the year for any bar, they are giving all the money they make to charity! Wow. I work for a non-profit org. and let me tell you, we need more businesses like this in New York. The party sounds good too: open bar, absinthe (is it real???) and a burlesque show. If I was gonna be here for new years, I would have already bought my ticket. But I'm headed to Paris, so don't feel too bad for me!
- Pros: Good wines and decor, classy
