The Scene
Everything about Bombay Talkie reflects the splashy style and playful contrasts of Bollywood films. The interior drips with shiny surfaces and cool tones, and a posh Chelsea crowd fills black-leather booths while gazing upon a colorful Bollywood dance mural. The movies themselves play on HDTV above the bar, and next to the screen, glowing pink letters spell out the drink choices, with names like A New Phase of Life.

The Food
The menu may not be as adventurous as the decor, but it's just as thorough in execution. There's nothing impoverished about the "Beggar's Purse," a brittle pastry filled with warm chickpeas and potatoes and topped with a refreshing tamarind sauce. Rice is paired with specific entrees: Lamb meatballs bathed in a subtle mustard sauce get the traditional yellow rice, while the fluffy white variety accompanies the moist, tandoori-cooked mahi mahi, amorously kissed with ginger and garlic.

i've never had a bad meal in my 30+ visits in the past 2 years. everything is delicious including the food. i've read about "small portions" in some of these reviews - are these people giants? are their stomachs so big they need food for 3-4 normal size adults? i always walk out feeling very satisfied with one appetizer (padhi chat) and one entree. i don't even eat the well-priced naan. if you want to go to east 6th street for "real" cheap indian food, go for it. no one asked you! it just leaves more room for people with good taste. thanks bt. love it there!

I've been here a couple of times before as it's the closest Indian restaurant to my job. The food is fairly good (considering that it's not traditional Indian) and the place is cute, so I recommended that two friends & I meet here for dinner. After checking my friend's suitcase we ordered 2 entrees, a side, & naan. The food was actually better than normal, but the lassi was awful. I told our waitress that although everything else was great, but my lassi was "milky" & she replied "it's not milk it's yogurt." I explained how I was referring to the consistancy and taste. She reluctantly took it back. The second lassi was thicker but still was off in taste. I asked my friend (who happens to be Indian) and she completely agreed. The waitress snapped at me as she took it away. We ordered gulab jamun for dessert, which was fairly okay. My friend discovered 20% gratuity had been added to our check. Our waitress stated there is a minimum of $25pp and since we didnt order that then she added the gratuity. We asked her where this is written, and she returned with a menu which read that this min only applies to parties of 6+ & that 5+ would have gratuity added - neither which reflected us. She tried to grab the credit cards that were on the table, but we took our cards back and asked for a manager. She stated that she was the manager. Then we asked her to get the owner on the phone. She stormed away and another server came over. He attempted to say how we were "given" two mango lassis. He then tried to say how "in NY if you don't like something you can't return it" which is rediculous. After going back and forth on the issue, I said that I would pay for 1 mango lassi but remove the tip and we can involve law enforcement if there was a further issue. The result? I paid for the nasty mango lassi. I've been monitoring my credit card ever since. I'll never return again. I'd rather go across town for a much better (and traditional) place. Avoid with a passion.

Bombay Talkie isn't my first pick for Indian restaurants, but it's the place my friend and I meet up at since it's in our neighborhood, so it has a special place in my heart. The food is good (but not the best Indian). Since I don't eat meat, I look to the vegetarian options but they all come out the same-mixed vegetables doused in sauce. I'd rather get a bunch of little things to make up my dinner. I love the Dark Brown Pod cocktail-my must have tamarind drink whenever I go. The atmosphere is cute and conducive to eating, chatting, and having a good time.
