WATCH YOUR SHOES!. I was invited this past Saturday, March 24th, to en Japanese Brasserie to celebrate my good friends 30th birthday dinner & was pleasantly surprised with the decor and ambiance of the restaurant. My friend rented a private room for the occasion and following Japanese tradition, we had to remove our shoes upon entering the secluded room. The food was just ok (they serve in VERY small portions thankfully) although the sake was great. The birthday girl slid open the door to get the waiter and found some drunken stranger trying on her NEW Sam Edelman booties with the lady screaming “These are fabulous, are these yours?” My friend just ignored her and stared her down until she removed the shoe and went back to her designated room. We informed the waiter and manager but all we got back was “I’m sorry” and that was all. I feel as paying customers, our party was respectful in following the Japanese customs by removing our shoes but could someone at least respect us and keep an eye out for them just in case someone decides to put their feet in them or God forbid, walk off with them. Maybe you should let guest just take the shoes inside of the private rooms and put them to the side or something. What if that lady had foot fungus or damaged it by trying it on. A simple “sorry” would NOT suffice. P.S. The bill was $503 for 8 people…and I left hungry. Not really mad about the price but for that tab, I could have ate like a QUEEN at Ruth Chris!
Very Special Japanese Experience. I am lover of cooked Japanese food and En is a standout. Spectacular interior, impeccable service from the host's greeting to the food runner. Fresh tofu is a special treat; stone grilled chicken; rice pot with salmon, shiso garlic rice and of course my favorite kakuni -- braised pork belly. I lovetreating myself to dinner at En, which is pricey but worth it. Excellent cocktails -- fresh grapefruit juice with shiso and japanese vodka amazing ---and interesting wine list, too.
Very good japanese.
A friend who lives near this restaurant recommended it to me, and my wife and I went there for lunch. We took the bento lunch with miso cod that many of the reviews mention here. We also ordered 4 small kyoto-style dishes (the waiter's recommendations on those were excellent). Everything was excellent. We would go again.
We didnt order any Sushi or other standard fare.
Citysearch Editorial Review. EN Japanese Brasserie fancies itself as an izakaya, a Japanese pub, but the sleek space, high ceilings and giant windows demonstrate a different identity, one far more in keeping its neighborhood’s tony environs than its faraway siblings (the owners also run several restaurants in Japan). Although the menu changes seasonally, always on offer is the house specialty: scooped tofu, made hourly during dinner service. Fish gets flown in daily for the sushi, sashimi and sushi rolls, but vegetables, including those that constitute the vegetarian konnyaku sashimi plate, are also imported, making this place authentic as authentic can be where it really counts: taste.
My Favorite!. This was my second time at En. The first time I came with my boyfriend, I promised myself I would be back. The second time around, I was not disappointed. I ordered several dishes including the black cod and fried rice. They were both amazing!! Loved it. I am craving them both as I write this review. I think I may have to stop by again and order them as take out! Its expensive but the food and service is worth it.
EN Has Gone Down Hill.
I have frequented this restaurant before and have found
that the qualities that once made this restaurant superior
are now lost. En's specialty is Tofu and they were out
of two of the favorite tofu dishes. The waiter tried
to have me order a Tofu dish that I did not want without
telling me that the two dishes I did want were not available.
I should have walked out. This waiter was brash
making fun of my mother with another waiter laughing
out loud in Japanese because she didn't like the dish
she had ordered. I ordered a dashi crab soup that was full of salt and a fishless piece of crab. I gave it to my husband because it was awful. I ordered the Perch which was fishy with a cheap sweat sauce that I hardly touched, The waiter brought out a salad that wasn't ordered thinking this too was funny until I called over the Manager saying this meal and the waiter were unacceptable. For the price this meal was bad news. The only thing redeeming about this experience was the promise never to go back.
Editorial Review. A stunning setting for sushi-weary New Yorkers to expand their Japanese dining vocabulary.
great place. My favorite restaurant in the city. It is expensive but it has great ambiance, beautiful dishes and everything tastes wonderful.
AMAZING RESTAURANT.
This place is beautiful. I travel a lot, I look at a lot of architecture and if I ever made a restaurant I would rip off EN from floor to ceiling. May be not completely, but I would definitely take my liberties. To me dining is more than just eating it encompasses the entire experience, I think that's why it's such a popular experience for dating, and this place is totally perfect for a beautiful experience.
I had the amazing kaiseki menu which was a perfect 8 courses, it kind of shocked me to see the pacing which is based on the way in which food is prepared as apposed to our western tradition of what it is we are preparing.
In addition the tofu here is amazing. I can't believe how good it is. I don't even think they should call it tofu or may be the commercial tofu shouldn't be called tofu. I was talking to my server about it, who happened to be really well informed about tofu. He told me that the tofu made fresh is like a totally different animal to the tofu that's made in a store because there are no additives, fresh tofu only lasts for a couple days and really only has that amazing custard consistency for the first few hours.
