“I've only been there once, and I truly enjoyed the atmosphere there, it is a place I felt like I could just sit back and not worrying about eating the delicious ribs with my 10 fingers.”
“Their ribs are definitely Top 10 for NYC but their burnt ends, frito pie and bacon chunks are great as well.”
“The iced tea is super tasty too and you can pick sweetened or unsweetened and they give you free refills.”
“Nice portion size - I was unable to finish the 3-meat combo platter.”
“Overall good place, great food, but a bit small (hey what do you expect in Chelsea?)”
“I'll be back for ribs and pulled pork - and more of those amazing oreos.”
“Their service is very very bad.”
“Fortunately for this place, the food is GREAT and is almost worth going through the hassles.”
“Not the best butt in town by a long shot!”
When RUB opened it identified itself as the city's Kansas City barbecue tribute, as Hill Country paid homage to Texas. In fact, RUB was always better and more interesting than anything in Kansas City, and catered to the hardcore barbecue geek more than any of its rivals. 100% wood fired where the others used gas fires to regulate heat, and creating specialty products, like burnt ends, pastrami, and duck that nobody else had, this is a special operation with a pitmaster, in Scotty Smith, that deserves to be ranked among the greats.
Delicious & enjoyable. I was very pleased w/ the bbq dinner I had here. I ordered a one meat platter w/ pulled pork, corn bread & baked beans, all of it was very tasty - flavored well & cooked perfectly. Note that they already give 2 slices of regular bread, which I hadn't known when I ordered the corn bread. The sauces were yummy too. I had a few bites of the brisket - flavorful but dry, I wouldn't recommend it (note I DO recommend Hill Country's brisket!). Large portions, great menu selection (wide variety of appetizers & entree options, Frito pie! 2 kinds of slaw - vinegar or mayo based, sandwiches, much more), friendly service, decent mid-level prices... I highly recommend checking this place out!
Great BBQ in NYC. This is a great all-around BBQ restaurant. Went there for my B-day with a party of 8 and everyone was very happy with their food, ordering across the different BBQ meats. The food was very good service was unremarkable (which lately seems to be a blessing as opposed to all of the poor service out there) and the atmosphere okay. Really the only complaint anyone had was they don't have Mac n' Cheese as a side. Overall good place, great food, but a bit small (hey what do you expect in Chelsea?).
With BBQ this good, nothing else matters!.
RUB can be all over the place when it comes to service. I've had both horrible and FANTASTIC wait staff serve me here. However, the one constant is the glorious FOOD! Yuuuum! By far (in my opinion) the best BBQ in NYC. Yeah, I said it. i've been there with other people (including my husband) and gotten through my entire meal without uttering more than three words. Why? Because my face was stuffed with perfectly prepared pulled pork and sides. I could have dined alone and I would have been just as content.
In my experience, NYC BBQ spots tend to focus on one element and are okay with everything else being average (i.e. Hill Country has the Best Mac and Cheese, but NO PULLED PORK). RUB on the other hand, gets most of their menu right. The meats, sides (minus the cornbread) and even the sweet tea! I'm drooling just writing this. Stop reading this review and go get some R.U.B.!!!
Worst customer service - Beware.
I've ordered from here a few times (big fan of the BBQ sausage) and tonight (at about 10:25pm) I ordered 2 plates for me and my boyfriend, one of which had pulled pork. We ate in separate rooms - about 1 hr later I put my leftovers in the fridge and noticed my boyfriend's leftover plate. I noticed his pulled pork was uneaten. There was a funny smell - I sniffed the pork (it smelled SOUR) and I tasted it (it tasted SOUR). My boyfriend couldn't eat it. So at 12midnight - I called RUB on the chance that someone was still there or I could leave a message. I ended up speaking to the manager on duty - AMY. AMY told me that all of the food is freshly smoked daily (I don't deny that), and my pulled pork was the last pork butt to be smoked, and maybe what I was smelling was the vinegar that's used to bind the meat.
Now I'm a Southern girl - and there's very popular spot I frequent in my home state called Whitt's BBQ. They use vinegar in their food, so I know what vinegar and meat smell and taste like together. This smelled and tasted like something had spoiled. AMY didn't believe me - according to her I was the only customer who complained tonight - and LOTS of people ate the same thing. So there's nothing she could do for me (not even a credit) but she would leave the GM "a very detailed note" and she MIGHT call me back. When I asked AMY the name of the GM (so I know whom I should expect - oh excuse me - might expect to call me), she said that she can't give out an employee's name (OH PLEASSSE....). And get this - she chided me for waiting an hour and half to call.
Unbelievably horrible AMY and awful customer service! Like she's never heard that maybe the customer is always right?? In her position she should have that stapled to her head. In this instance the customer is right, and I'll be marching over tomorrow with the spoiled butt and throwing it right back in their faces. This is one customer that will never sing their praises again!
Environmental Hazard. The food was great but all of their dishware and cups are disposable. I don't feel like creating that much waste is acceptable any longer. I hate to think about how much waste they generate every day. I wouldn't go back unless they got non-disposable dishware.
Don't expect much. My girlfriend and I went there on Saturday afternoon. I wish the wait had been longer, we may have decided not to stay. We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes, which, aside from not being green, tasted just okay. In fact, everything was just ok. And that's being nice. I had some special 18 hour smoked meat thing that was probably 50% fat. My girlfriend got the rib tips which were chewy and not all that flavorful. Other reviews have complained that the food had too much sauce on it, but I found I had to drown my dish in the sauce on the table. After we left I felt physically sick (too much fat, I guess). Bottom line, don't expect much here. It sounds like it might be something special, but it turned out to be about as good as Applebees.
Get extra napkins..
Great waitress service and outstanding ribs. BBQ sauce is amazing, Don't forget the extra napkins, gets a bit messy.
Good selection of beers too.
O K. Went to R.U.B. last night, here goes: Beer selection was very good, we waited a good hour to sit(on a saturday night, that was expected)the staff was a little harried but helpful.I had the pulled pork sandwich, it came on a nice roll and was not bad.The beans were a little too spicy, and didn't need to be. The cornbread was off the hook, but the fries were overspiced and soggy. It seemed the food was a bit oversmoked and overspiced but , overall, ok.I would reccomend going midweek, when its a little less crowded.
Not the best butt in town by a long shot!.
So far I've only tried their ribs and pulled pork sandwich. It seems as though they use their bbq sauce as a crutch. The ribs were dry and over smoked. Even seemed to have some creosote going on. The sandwich was good but without the sauce it was just your average pulled pork sandwich. The white bread dipped in sauce thus far is the best thing I've had their. Beans, mac and cheese, corn bread are all mediocre at best.
The brisket was wasn't bad. But it wasn't great either. At the prices they are charging they should be turning out some awesome que but they aren't. Maybe the cooks the owner trained are lacking but something is definitely wrong.
Sit down service was pretty bad but as busy as they are it's understandable.
I make better ribs and butts and I'm a novice in comparison. DaisyMays easily eclipses this place in terms of taste and qualtiy of food. Why is it so hard for people to make good que?
Their sauce is out of this world though!
Tasty burnt ends, great waitress!. Totally love Rub.... Our waitress Eviana told us what to eat, burnt ends, pulled pork, great duck. We loved everything except the lemonade, which was watery. Went with a big group and had a blast, messy, decadent grub and super knowledgeable waitress equals the best BBQ joint in the city!
