AMAZING FOOD AND DRINKS! – Every dish we ordered tasted wonderful. The staff was very attentive and friendly. We had Kobe beef sliders, Tuna with wasabi, some pizza dish and others. They were all VERY GOOD.If you have a large group, they cut everything into smaller pieces so everyone can share. Would definitely go back! But make sure to make reservations as they get really packed!
Located on Stanton Street on the Lower East Side of New York dwells The Stanton Social, a popular restaurant that serves a variety of "small plates" to everyone's delight. The theory is that sharing dishes, which arrive throughout the duration of the meal, makes for a very "social" experience, and thus the name of the restaurant, I suspect.
This sounds like a beautiful notion.
Except that my experience there this weekend was unbelievably anti-social, thus the clever little name I have rebranded this place with (The Stanton ANTI-Social).
My friend and her fiance invited me to meet them there, so that we could have a drink and catch up. When I got to the restaurant, they were about finished with their meal, so I sat next to my friend on the "booth side" of the table. Suddenly some guy with short, wavy brown hair, who we later learned is the manager, came over and said, "this is NOT a three-person table, you can NOT all sit here." So my friend's fiance agreed and we all nodded along as the manager-boy ran off. We then quickly started to complain amongst ourselves about what an uptight freak this guy was (and is, everyday of his life, I suspect). Not ones to stay where we aren't wanted, we asked the waitress for the check and continued on with our conversation while we waited for it. About 7.2 minutes later, the manager-lad returned to the table demanding, "ONE OF YOU HAS GOT TO GO." Again, my friend's fiance agreed, explaining that we were waiting for the check.
The check came, we paid, and got up to leave. As I was walking out the same manager-dude said, "thank you, gooodniiight!" To which I responded, "um, yeah, right." Then my friend stopped him and explained how that was the rudest most uncalled for experience she had ever had in a restaurant in her entire life and that we would make sure never to return and recommend the same to all of our friends.
Total Rip Off – Wouldn't it be great if you could run a business where you overcharge your customers, treat them like cr@p and not care when they complain? Well that must be what the owners of the Stanton Social feel like. We ordered 9 items for 4 people and the running joke throughout the night was that the food was so small, you almost couldn't see it on the plate. We were told by the waitress at the beginning that everything was served "Family Style" and meant to be shared - but what you end up sharing are half-bite sized morsels about the size of 1/4 of a business card. I can't imagine anyone ever leaving this place feeling full. The fact that they even give you utensils for food that you can eat with toothpicks makes it even more absurd.
fantastic for sunday brunch, excellent menu and a firm favourite, well worth a visit. staff very friendly and service is amazing.
YOU MUST GO!!! – One of the BEST dining experiences ever in NYC! Went with some friends this weekend and will be talking about Stanton Social for a long time!! We did a "chef's tasting", if you will, and tried nearly the entire menu. I recommend ordering as much as your group can handle because every single bite, right down to dessert, is AMAZING!! A few suggestions... The ribs (the meat falls right off the bone), Kobe Sliders, and of course 'The Chocolate Tasting' for dessert. Service was impeccable, presenation perfected, atmosphere upbeat and fun. You will love this place! 5 STARS!!!!
Amazing for Brunch & Dinner – We randomly had brunch and dinner there this weekend and both were amazing. We were with a large party and the food was phenomenal. We over ordered a bit, but everyone wanted to try everything. The staff was great and really accomodating to some of my picky eater friends.
We will be back.
A unique experience – Probably one of the finest places to eat that I have experienced whilst being in the city. Very resonably priced wine. I can't recommend this place enough.
best dumplings ever! – My boyfriend and I went here for valentines day and had one of our best dinners ever! We had a reservation for 9:30 on v day and the hostess sat us right away which was surprising because it was so busy in there. At first I was sceptical that it would be the experience we were looking for but they sat us at this cozy booth where we could sit next to each other and watch the buzzing dinning room. But really the best part of the night was the french onion soup dumplings they were sooooo good! The waitress was really nice and even though our dinner was fairly quick we didnt feel rushed. We will definitely be back.
DON'T EAT HERE – I don't think I've ever had a worse experience with restaurant management. I'd clearly explained to the nice waitress that I was vegetarian (and she got it because she herself was vegetarian), but found myself biting into a sandwich that had a fat slab of bacon in it. Sadly, not the first (or no doubt, the last) time this has happened to me in a restaurant. Normally, when this happens, the manager is apologetic, comes over to express his/her sympathy and offers to comp the dish and replace it. Here, the waitress apologized profusely and spoke with her manager about it. The manager didn't bother to come over to apologize. The waitress told us she was getting us a new order of the same dish without the bacon. I told her I didn't want it -- I'd lost my appetite. Still, they sent the dish over. We didn't eat it, and it went to waste. Then, without asking or telling us, they sent over a dessert that I did not want, and that too went to waste. I asked to speak with the manager. I explained that I was surprised he didn't personally come over to apologize. Clearly, for a lot of people, dietary restrictions are important, and finding bacon in your food can be highly unpleasant. Certainly, it was for me. He was already on the defensive and kind of angry. Said he didn't come over because he was busy ordering replacement food for us. I explained that I'd clearly said I didn't want the replacement food, and his ignoring my wishes was disrespectful. He just says, "sorry you feel that way" -- an apology that's not really an apology, but instead an insult. He didn't offer to comp that awful dish at any point. I will never go back, and I'm telling everyone, my veg and non-veg friends alike, to avoid the place like the plague. Worst manager I've ever encountered, and you never know what you're going to find in your food.
Not Socially Acceptable – My fiance and I ate there last fall. The Experience was average. I say this because although the decor ( clearly accomplished with minimum funding...Art store/BB & B/Target ) was very chic and upscale feeling, the concept of taking classics and turning them into tapas is nothing new. Every chain restaurant in the country does that. The fact is, after about three of them, they all taste the same. No originality, beyond presentation. The food was ok at best. No flavors that pop or wow the senses. What a shame because they act like they discovered plutonium in there. And BTW a bathroom needs a buffer zone..NSA Stanton Social! I felt terrible for those poor girls in the booth located ADJACENT to the Restroom Door. All those people, standing in front of that table, urging to get in and relieve themselves. I wonder how their food tasted in that booth.
