What Our Expert Scouts Say

November 11, 2012

Luzzo's (formerly Zito's East) is a unique hybrid pizza: it's cooked and composed in the Napoletana style, with thin crust and fresh mozzarella and wood fire, but in a 120 year old coal oven that provides far more heat than any wood oven could. The result is spectacular, and criminally underrated.

Distressing. I had not been to Luzzo's for a couple of years and I had some good souvenirs of my past visits but I was in for a treat this time- for starters a Camorra lookalike maitre d' seated us and basically threw the menus on the table, my wife and I ordered an escarole and white bean soup which resembled more a bowl of hot water with some green matter, followed by a buffalo mozzarella pizza which was OK but tasteless and then by a plate of soggy, oily spaghetti (very small portion) swimming amidst a few baby tomatoes.

And we also got the attitude and it is also extremely expensive for what it is. Stay away from this pseudo Italian southern hovel. I forgot to tell you that the decor is dreadful

Really Good Pizza, But Bring Earplugs. Ok, it was a 7:30 reservation for 9 people, a little tough to accommodate perfectly, but they should've had our table ready. No big deal wait, about 10 minutes, but I had specifically asked that they have the table ready because I was bringing a 90 and 93 year old. Ok, the pizza better be worth the wait...and so it was! The pizza is really the best we Italophile have had in NY...much better than SD 26. The pappardelle with mushrooms was dreamy and the artichoke appetizer quite yummy. The service was good, food came promptly, but we had to ask them 4 times to turn down the music, which was so incredibly loud that the table of 7 ladies across from us had to scream at each other to speak, thus making the room deafening. Once the music was lowered, things were more tolerable. Next time we go, I think we'll bring a smaller group and sit at a booth in the front. And the food is so good, that there will be a next time!

Great Italian brick oven style pizza. I don't know why some people got poor service here but when I was here, it was fine. We got our order and food relatively fast.

Between my boyfriend and I, we ordered a large spicy salami with cheese pizza and the fried calamari as an appetizer. The pizza is crusty and chewy and the salami was flavorful. I just wish there was more salami!

We didn't finish the pizza as the fried calamari came in such a big portion. The price here is pretty reasonable and we had a good time here.

Outstanding!. Just had the ricotta pizza and salad at Luzzo's two nights ago and they were both out of this world! The service was prompt and friendly; so, I guess they've heeded previous complaints made on this website. I would highly recommend, if you're looking for real authentic pizza similar to in Italy.

Worst service ever!. Very poor service with the hostess and also with the waiter. Would not go back, even though the pizza was good

Disappointing. We saw a TV program about this restaurant and traveled to the East Village to seek it out. The service was excellent... very attentive. The waiter even offered to let us sample arugula as we were not sure we would like it.

The much-touted pizza was a huge disappointment. It was floppy, had very little sauce and the crust was not even near crispy. In fact, the bottom had black residue from the oven which made it taste burnt. We asked for a light amount of arugula on half the pizza. It came covered with arugula. We looked for the Margarita pizza on the menu only to find out later the name had been changed to Bufala pizza because of the cheese they now use on it. Sad to say the trip was not worth the pizza.

The eggplant appetizer, on the other hand, was to die for. We'll try this place again but we won't be ordering pizza.

Luzzo's of Westbury, NY. The buzz is true!!! The food was AMAZING, if you know authentic Italian cooking it's ALL that & more to rave about...Let me tell you a little about my experience...We started with appetizers...

The Bruschetta~it was SOOO good, the flavors were perfect & the tomato's were so fresh!!

We also had the Curcio Gratinati--baked artichokes, they were the 1st to go, could of had another round of those!!

Then we had the Prosciutto E Mozzarella, this dish was so amazing!! You could tell it the difference in taste with other restaurants because the freshness was impeccable!!

Then we had a Campana Pizza. The flavor was so amazing because of the mozzarella & the sauce with just the right amount of basil & parmigiano. The coal oven way it's made blows away the regular oven made at other pizzerias. The crust was perfect!! Again, if you know good food, you can tell the difference...

Then we had our main dishes. Rigatoni Alla Norma--Rigatoni with Eggplant & Ricotta cheese, the pasta was cooked just the right amount~the only thing my friend added to that was an extra plate of Ricotta on top of what she received with her meal because she loves A LOT of Ricotta with her meal!!

I had the Lasagna Di Carne, which is my favorite dish & it's the 1st thing I try everywhere i go. Needless to say, the flavors of the sauce & the meat were the best I've probably ever had!!! The meat was seasoned so well, the pasta was so fresh & the flavors between all of them together were really were Devinne!! It wasn't served with ricotta cheese, as it's an authentic Italian restaurant, but it didn't even need it!! altho my friend used her extra ricotta that she ordered & had it with her part, since she can never get enough of ricotta cheese & even the ricotta was yummy!!

There was hardly room for dessert, as we tried to taste & share as much as we could, but we went for it anyway & had some gelato. It was so creamy! Then we ordered zeppoles with nutella inside~it was so good we ordered another round to go!!! Let me say I've NEVER had that combo of the zeppole with the nutella~what a treat!! It came out nice & hot with sugar on top. It wasn't heavy, as zeppoles usually are, they were light & had a nice crispness to them~ AMAZING!!

Props to the chef & the staff for giving us a GREAT dining experience & we WILL be back!!!!

As far as the service, we had 2 waiters attending to us all night, as we were there a long time, taking our time & enjoying the atmosphere. We must of been there 3 hours & weren't rushed out in the least!!!

This restaurant is AMAZING & Long Island was over due for a restaurant that could offer this kind of Italian cuisine.. I had no complaints or would of changed anything. I'm going back next week to try more yummy meals!!! Enjoy everyone, it's a treat!! :0)

service so bad you'll wish you'd never heard of the place. ordered two pies a week ago for take out, one a vegetarian (the arugula) for my girlfriend. We get back to our apartment to find they've given us the vegetarian with prosciutto. Normally not a big problem, we'll call them up, tell them they gave us the wrong pizza, go back and exchange it. Instead, we call them up, the hostess insists, actually yells, that they did not make a mistake (their online menu was different than their house menu), and I have to go back there to show them their error on my phone; they did not believe me until I showed them this! Only then did I get the right pizza, an hour and a half after we had ordered. I'm not one to insist that the customer is always right, but when there is clearly a mistake on their part it is just appalling to be yelled at over the phone. unbelievable! What's more, a week later they still haven't updated their online menu!

Best Authentic Pie in 'hood!. This is by far my favorite authentic Italian Pizza place in NYC. My friends and I love this place. The calamari is tender and never over cooked. The pastas are to die for. The owner/staff are the most friendly around. Highly recommended. You can go wrong here folks. Plan to wait for a table on the weekends though...well worth it.
