Editorial Review for The Cabanas – by Lori Fradkin
The Scene
Late-night patrons at the Maritime Hotel's open-air bar unwind in an outdoor, though unequal atmosphere. While the exclusive North Cabana boasts reserved wooden tables, waitress service and limited patrons, the South Cabana welcomes less elite guests to a standing-room-only setting. Even the classic rock of the north side doesn't cross the connecting bridge, but no one in the conversing crowd seems to notice. But regardless of their social status, casually dressed guests sip from large daiquiri-style glasses and savor the great outdoors.
The Draw
Not everyone gets to the Hamptons for the weekend, and this al fresco bar injects the Meatpacking District with its own beach flavor. As if the bar were truly beyond Manhattan borders, a cigarette-selling staff member even offers patrons the chance to smoke. Frozen mojitos and mango margaritas also match the stylish seaside atmosphere, while suspended paper lanterns light up the locale.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThis outdoor bar is not high enough above street level to show off the city. Instead it provides only a view of the hotel's porthole-shaped windows.
When to GoThe South Cabana closes during the fall and winter months.
Save TimeThe entrance for the North Cabana is at 9th Avenue and 17th Street. Guests of the South Cabana enter at 9th Avenue and 16th Street.

...do go to Cabanas! Never before have I felt so compelled to write a review. Was at Cabanas last night for my friend Krenar's B-Day party. The supposed "guest list" is a myth. The nasty Prince Wannabe bouncer uses his clipboard for accessorizing only. Showed up around 12ish and scooted to the front of the line to inform the bouncer we were on a list - our friends were already inside with two tables ordering bottle service. When we approached the bouncer (two stunning blonds with a line full on dudes behind us) and told him we were on a guest list for the party he didn't even acknowledge us addressing him. It was the most belittling treatment I have ever encountered in my five years of living in Manhattan. Had I not been there for my friend's party I would have turned heel and not looked back but instead I dealt with the 30 minute wait in the line. When I finally got to the front of the line the bouncer asked how many people I was with and when I answered he just stared at me like I had spoken in a foreign language - I repeated what I said and he still just keep staring like he couldn't comprehend my answer. Finally he pulls back the ubiquitous red rope and and we go upstairs to be greeted by a horrendous crowd of B&Ts. The tables my friends had were on the last pours of their bottle service and the bar was 5 people deep. Suggestion: hire more bartenders or have more efficient cocktail waitresses. After not being able to get a drink for about 15 minutes (very much needing one after the downstairs degradation) I walked out. And won't be back. How the rating has 4 1/2 stars given my experience and the other reviews I've read makes no sense. Heed my advice and stay away.
Pros: None
Cons: Bouncer, crowd, everything

Never seen a place throw the 'attitude' for so little reason. Sure, they could justify their behavior if the rooftop offered vistas of downtown or the rivers, but Cabanas is a rooftop-in-name-only. Your entire view is of the side of the Maritime Hotel - in fact, Cabanas is really a balcony, not a rooftop. In working with Cabanas on events, they have proven rude and 'inconsistent' (to be polite) in their statements.
Pros: decent beach-style theme
Cons: not really a rooftop, poor service and management
