Klong

Bangkok Street Food

  • Authentic Thai cuisine
  • Lunch & Dinner
  • Delivery available

In Thai, Klong means canal. Many of Thailand's Klongs are relaxing sites of refuge and escapes from the stressors of the city. Klong, on the East Village's frenetic St. Marks Place, is a respite from stress. Upon arrival our customers enter under a curved, undulating golden ribbon cast of smoothly polished steel. Hundres of feet of the dynamic, Earth toned ribbon travel from the entrance to every corner of the restaurant, surrounding our diners with a secure and calm energy.

The childhood experiences of our owners, a group who grew up in Bangkok in the 70s shape much of what Klong is today, particulary in our cuisine. Klong features a medley of fantastic street foods of Bangkok including Pad Thai or Som Tum, to name a few.

Editorial Review for Klong – by Eric Grossman

The Scene
Standing in stark contrast to St. Marks' numerous nondescript ethnic joints, Klong is a study in contemporary minimalist chic. After passing through a diminutive bar area where budget-minded scenesters gather for cheap drink specials, diners fill all corners of the dining room. Undulating light fixtures and shimmering pools ("klong" means canal in Thai) add to the trendy vibe. Harried waiters do their best to satiate the crowds by hurrying to and from the open kitchen in back.

The Food
It's hard not to be impressed with the affordability and breadth of Klong's menu, in which dozens of rice and noodle dishes can be prepared with any number of meats and fish. Colorful starters include crisp salmon spring rolls and meltingly tender, marinated spare ribs. Budget-minded diners should eschew pricier house specials (tea-smoked chicken, lychee duck) in favor of gargantuan plates of Pad Kee Mao (spicy basil noodles) and Massaman curry.

Green curry is great and the pad prik khing is good as well. The extra spice they offer gives it a little kick. The Samui drink is great if you like coconut and the martinis are good but a bit strong. We got there before 7 and it wasn't too packed.

Pros: great food, service, drinks

Cons: got crowded as we were leaving

Klong is by far the best Thai in NYC. It's a relatively inexpensive as opposed to a lot of restaurants like it in the city. It's atmosphere is super hip & trendy with decorations like hanging beads instead of doors, metal sculptures that somehow work their way around the room and end up being seats and abacuses attached to the wall. The only real issue I have is the basement. It's SMELL sometimes creeps up into the restaurant. They really need to put a DOOR instead of hanging beads at the top of the stairwell to the basement. Other than that, I bring all my friends there and it has also become THEIR favorite Thai spot. Love it. Would definitely recommend. Just don't go on a Friday or Saturday between 7-10...the crowding is INSANE.

Pros: Great ambiance.

Cons: Weekend crowding.
