Turks & Frogs

Romantic Wine Bar. Perfect for Dates.

  • Great West Village Location
  • Charming, Perfect Date Spot
  • Turkish Wine, Food Specialties

Turkish Delight! The charming West Village antique shop Turks & Frogs has just morphed into an even more charming wine bar. The inevitable Meatpackingization of the neighborhood? Maybe. But there will be no velvet ropes here. As it turns out, owner Osman Cakir always wanted to run a bar. So he recruited little brother Orhan, a veteran of Savann and Pasha, and got a liquor license. They're now serving more than 50 wines from around the world, including Turkey, and snacks like fruit and cheese plates, olives, and pastrima (Turkish pastrami) - and whatever else they feel like whipping up. (It's all very welcome-to-my-parlor here.) The space is split into two rooms: bar and tables up front; sitting room with bookshelves and backgammon boards in the back. Good luck getting dibs on the leather sofa. --Daily Candy's Best of 2004

Editorial Review for Turks & Frogs – by Erin Behan

The Scene
This cozy Turkish antique shop turned wine bar sits off a quiet side street in the West Village. Though its red and green interior isn't polished to perfection, its charm makes up for any oddities (such as the indoor faux wall with windows). An added twist: Most of the urns and antiques on display are for sale--just ask.

The Draw
Couples and small groups of friends begin filling the tables as night falls, but the most interesting seat is at the bar, where patrons can sample any of the seven Turkish wines (or 60 more traditional reds and whites), and get impromptu lessons about Turkish culture, wine and food. And the options aren't limited to wine. For an authentic Turkish treat, experiment with the lebni--a thick, almost cheese-like yogurt dip. Those with less adventurous palates, might opt for the stuffed grape leaves, which satisfy as both savory and sweet.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

For a red that bursts with berry flavor, try Chateau Potelle's zinfandel. White drinkers looking for a new Turkish favorite should try the light, fragarent Cankaya from Kavaklidere. The bar also sells the most popular beer in Turkey, Efes.

I went here on a first date recently and had a great time. The ambiance was intimate and good for conversation. We drank some wine and time flew by. The staff was friendly and available when needed. Highly recommended.

Pros: Ambiance, Service

2 Star Rating: Below Average

Pros: Nice venue, good wine, very cosy, looks like a great date place Cons: Rude service, slow service Event: I was part of a group that did drinks at Turks & Frogs several nights ago. The first group (3) had a few drinks and the second (3) joined us later. We both had seperate checks. We drank at the bar. The bartender got into an argument with the other group when they tried to pay their check because he insisted on a bigger tip. Now if I don't call that rude/bad service I don't know what is. Also, very very very slow service in ordering food.
