There's one reason to go to Almondine: the croissants. These are the best in the city, and one of them, with a hot cup of coffee, might be the perfect hangover breakfast. It's way downtown though, so really only useful if you happen to be in the financial district.
Editorial Review. This DUMBO bakery, opened by pastry chef Herve Poussot, serves sumptious desserts, pastries, bread, cookies and more.
I lov ethe sandwiches. The dessert is great. But, the bread and sandwiches make me feel like I am in Paris again everytime I go there.
Exquisite Cakes- Room for Service.
Normally, I'd make my own chocolate desserts; I'm a bit of an amateur pastry chef. That said, there was no time this year, so I ordered Almondine's"Opera Cake" for my wife's 60th B'day The cake was exquisite- really wonderful - everything I expected. If not for a few service glitches I'd award this place five stars.
My only negatives relate to their business/ service operation, not those scrumptious cakes. Be warned: Almondine only takes cash, no credit and they don't deliver. ( Actually, I was surprised that Jacques Torres, who is a partner, would let that fly) Anyway, if you have the time to wander over to Dumbo, cash in hand, then it's not an issue. However, there was one more glitch: After agreeing on a delivery time and price, the bakery called the next day to say that they had to push back the delivery date by a day. They also increased the price of the cake by 30%. Neither was important to me, but some folks might scream. Truth be told, I would have paid more, especially given the quality, if only they would have agreed to delivery and credit cards.
Note: Blue Apron Foods on Union Street in Park Slope carries Almondine cakes and tarts. They have a small case in the front of their store. They also take special orders for Almondine, and let you pay with plastic.
Delicious french pastry. I'm a big dessert lover, especially French pastry. Their pastry is heavenly delicious and the price is very good too. It's about half of the price of Payard's dessert. If you love Payard, you'll love Almondine too. I have been there several times and tried different kind of dessert. All of them are good.
delicious. We just found this place passing through DUMBO one Saturday and we are glad we did. The best sandwiches and eclairs I have ever tasted and the smell of the bakery is heavenly!!!! My new fave place for sweets!
France in Brooklyn.
You are lucky if you happen to stumble upon this fabulous French patisserie-bakery-cafe in DUMBO, Brooklyn. My French boyfriend agrees that the French Baguettes are the best outside of France, and the pastries are great (especially the Creme Brulee Cake and Chocolate Eclairs). The French owner and chef can always be seen baking in the back kitchen making his pastries, and is always willing to come out for a friendly chat.
At lunch time a daily changing selection of sandwiches served on fresh baguettes come out (Chicken Pesto, Pate, and super good Tuna are a few of the choices) as well as soup du jours and German pretzel breads.
Its only a matter of time before this one-year old DUMBO treasure becomes a favorite throughout Brooklyn.
